Background: In India, the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) has adopted the strategy of examining two specimens during follow-up culture examinations to monitor the treatment response of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients.

Objectives: To determine the incremental yield of the second sputum specimen during follow-up culture examinations among patients with MDR-TB and the effect on case management on changing from two to one specimen follow-up strategy.

Methods: A cross sectional record review of MDR-TB patients registered during 2008-09 under RNTCP was undertaken in three MDR-TB treatment sites of India.

Craniosynostosis is a complex condition, characterized by the premature fusion of one of more of the cranial sutures. They can be seen individually or as part of multisystem syndromes. Background: Though internationally recommended, provider initiated HIV testing and counseling (PITC) of persons suspected of tuberculosis (TB) is not a policy in India; HIV seroprevalence among TB suspects has never been reported. The current policy of PITC for diagnosed TB cases may limit opportunities of early HIV diagnosis and treatment. We determined HIV seroprevalence among persons suspected of TB and assessed feasibility and effectiveness of PITC implementation at this earlier stage in the TB diagnostic pathway.

Ultrasound parameters (attenuation, phase velocity, and backscatter), bone mineral density (BMD), and microarchitectural features were measured on 29 human cancellous calcaneus samples in vitro. Regression analysis was performed to predict ultrasound parameters from BMD and microarchitectural features. The best univariate predictors of the ultrasound parameters were the indexes of bone quantity: BMD and bone volume fraction (BV/TV).

Recently, detailed theoretical models of calcium dynamics and plasma membrane electrophysiology have emerged to assist in the quantification of these intra and intercellular fluxes and enhance understanding of their physiological importance.

To assess response to anti-tuberculosis treatment as per national guidelines, a retrospective record review was undertaken in four districts of Andhra Pradesh, India, in December 2009 to determine whether pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients reported as successfully treated (cured or treatment completed) underwent all scheduled follow-up sputum smear examinations. In a quarterly cohort of 3000 PTB patients reported as successfully treated, 1847 (61.5%) underwent all follow-up sputum examinations, with a higher proportion of new cases (65%) than retreatment cases (45%).

In the absence of active TB disease, household contacts aged <6 years are eligible for Isoniazid Preventive Therapy (IPT) (5 milligrams/kilogram body weight/day) for 6 months.

A tracking system has been developed to provide real-time feedback of skin dose and dose rate during interventional fluoroscopic procedures. The dose tracking system (DTS) calculates the radiation dose rate to the patient's skin using the exposure technique parameters and exposure geometry obtained from the x-ray imaging system digital network (Toshiba Infinix) and presents the cumulative results in a color mapping on a 3D graphic of the patient. We performed a number of tests to verify the accuracy of the dose representation of this system.

Accumulation of microdamage in aging and disease can cause skeletal fragility and is one of several factors contributing to osteoporotic fractures. To better understand the role of microdamage in fragility fracture, the mechanisms of bone failure must be elucidated on a tissue-level scale where interactions between bone matrix properties, the local biomechanical environment, and bone architecture are concurrently examined for their contributions to microdamage formation. A technique combining histological damage assessment of individual trabeculae with linear finite element solutions of trabecular von Mises and principal stress and strain was used to compare the damage initiation threshold between pre-menopausal (32-37 years, n=3 donors) and post-menopausal (71-80 years, n=3 donors) femoral cadaveric bone.

This study presents a multicellular computational model of a rat mesenteric arteriole to investigate the signal transduction mechanisms involved in the generation of conducted vasoreactivity. The model comprises detailed descriptions of endothelial (ECs) and smooth muscle (SM) cells (SMCs), coupled by nonselective gap junctions. With strong myoendothelial coupling, local agonist stimulation of the EC or SM layer causes local changes in membrane potential (V(m)) that are conducted electrotonically, primarily through the endothelium.

Background And Objectives: In our center, systemic lupus erythematosus nephritis is routinely treated with an oral cyclophosphamide (POCY) regimen. POCY is easy to administer and less expensive than intravenous cyclophosphamide (IVCY) as it is currently used in the United States; however, the use of POCY has declined in favor of IVCY. Our experience with POCY suggests that it is well tolerated and consistently associated with good long-term outcomes.

Sodium stibogluconate (Pentostam(R); GlaxoSmithKline) is a pentavalent antimonial compound used in the treatment of leishmaniasis, which has an association with reactivation of varicella zoster virus (VZV). We report the first known case of an immunocompetent adult who developed VZV aseptic meningitis and dermatomal herpes zoster during treatment with sodium stibogluconate.
