We propose HaptoFloater, a low-latency mid-air visuo-haptic augmented reality (VHAR) system that utilizes imperceptible color vibrations. When adding tactile stimuli to the visual information of a mid-air image, the user should not perceive the latency between the tactile and visual information. However, conventional tactile presentation methods for mid-air images, based on camera-detected fingertip positioning, introduce latency due to image processing and communication.

Article Synopsis
  • Skeletal muscles can adapt and regenerate in response to injury or mechanical stress, but the specific cellular mechanisms behind this adaptation are not well understood.
  • Researchers used single-cell RNA sequencing to analyze gene expression in overloaded muscles and found that the cellular makeup of overloaded muscles closely resembled that of regenerating muscles, especially during macrophage activity.
  • They discovered that granulin, a factor produced by macrophages, plays a significant role in inhibiting muscle satellite cell differentiation, and granulin-knockout mice had reduced muscle growth due to premature differentiation of those cells.

Aim: Cyst formation of the jaws is frequently accompanied by the proliferation of odontogenic epithelial cells located in the periodontal ligament (PDL), which consists of heterozygous cells and includes the most fibroblasts. The lining epithelium of radicular cyst, an odontogenic cyst of inflammatory origin, is derived from the proliferation of the remnants of the Hertwig epithelial root sheath (odontogenic epithelial cell rests of Malassez; ERMs) in the PDL. ERMs are maintained at a lower proliferative state under physiological conditions, but the regulatory mechanisms underlying the inflammation-dependent enhanced-proliferative capabilities of ERMs are not fully understood.

Insulin receptor substrate-2 (IRS-2), a substrate of the insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I receptor, is highly expressed in the prostate cancer cell line, PC3. We recently demonstrated that extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk1/2), a kinase downstream of IGF signaling, is activated in PC3 cells under serum starvation, and this activation can be inhibited by IRS-2 knockdown. Here, we observed that adding an IGF-I-neutralizing antibody to the culture medium inhibited the activation of Erk1/2.

Murine tooth germ development proceeds in continuous sequential steps with reciprocal interactions between the odontogenic epithelium and the adjacent mesenchyme, and several growth factor signaling pathways and their activation are required for tooth germ development. The expression of ADP-ribosylation factor (Arf)-like 4c (Arl4c) has been shown to induce cell proliferation, and is thereby involved in epithelial morphogenesis and tumorigenesis. In contrast, the other functions of Arl4c (in addition to cellular growth) are largely unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • Interchain disulfide bonds in monoclonal antibodies can be reduced during large-scale production using CHO cells, leading to lower product yield and purity.
  • The reduction susceptibility varies by cell line, and there hasn't been an effective method to screen for reduction-resistant CHO cells until now.
  • The new screening method can test up to 48 cell lines simultaneously and reveals that reduction-susceptible lines have higher NADPH and NADP levels, suggesting that this method could help improve mAb production.

Carcinogenesis is a multistep process wherein cells accumulate multiple genetic alterations and progress to a more malignant phenotype. It has been proposed that sequential accumulation of gene abnormalities in specific genes drives the transition from non-tumorous epithelia through a preneoplastic lesion/benign tumor to cancer. Histologically, oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) progresses in multiple ordered steps that begin with mucosal epithelial cell hyperplasia, which is followed by dysplasia, carcinoma in situ and invasive carcinoma.

Tooth germ development involves continuous and sequential steps with reciprocal interactions between odontogenic epithelium and the adjacent mesenchyme. Several growth factors, including Wnt, are essential for tooth germ development. Molecular mechanisms underlying Wnt/β-catenin-regulated tooth germ development are poorly understood.

Purpose: Tracking the position and orientation of a 4F catheter ([Formula: see text] 1.4 mm) is required in superselective intra-arterial chemotherapy (SSIAC). Tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) sensors, which measure magnetic fields, are promising candidates because the size of the TMR sensor can be less than a few tenths of a millimeter.

We recently demonstrated that Semaphorin 3 A (Sema3A), the expression of which is negatively regulated by Wnt/β-catenin signaling, promotes odontogenic epithelial cell proliferation, suggesting the involvement of Sema3A in tooth germ development. Salivary glands have a similar developmental process to tooth germ development, in which reciprocal interactions between the oral epithelium and adjacent mesenchyme proceeds via stimulation with several growth factors; however, the role of Sema3A in the development of salivary glands is unknown. There may thus be a common mechanism between epithelial morphogenesis and pathogenesis; however, the role of Sema3A in salivary gland tumors is also unclear.

Oral malignant melanoma, which frequently invades the hard palate or maxillary bone, is extremely rare and has a poor prognosis. Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) is abundantly expressed in bone matrix and is highly expressed in malignant melanoma, inducing an aggressive phenotype. We examined the role of BMP signaling in the acquisition of an aggressive phenotype in melanoma cells in vitro and in vivo.

We report, for the first time, the three-dimensional structure and biochemical properties of a UDP-galactose 4-epimerase-like l-threonine 3-dehydrogenase (GalE-like L-ThrDH) from Phytophthora infestans, a plant disease-causing fungus. We identified GalE-like L-ThrDH using Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database as a candidate target for the development of a new fungicide. The GalE-like L-ThrDH gene was expressed in Escherichia coli, and its product was purified and characterized.

Histone acetylation plays crucial roles in transcriptional regulation and chromatin organization. Viral RNA of the influenza virus interacts with its nucleoprotein (NP), whose function corresponds to that of eukaryotic histones. NP regulates viral replication and has been shown to undergo acetylation by the cAMP-response element (CRE)-binding protein (CBP) from the host.

Genetic and epigenetic alterations are both involved in carcinogenesis, and their low-level accumulation in normal tissues constitutes cancer risk. However, their relative importance has never been examined, as measurement of low-level mutations has been difficult. Here, we measured low-level accumulations of genetic and epigenetic alterations in normal tissues with low, intermediate, and high cancer risk and analyzed their relative effects on cancer risk in the esophagus and stomach.

The control of protein solubility is a subject of broad interest. Although several solvent screening methods are available to search for compounds that enhance protein solubilization, their performance is influenced by the intrinsic solubility of the tested protein. We now present a method for screening solubilizing compounds, using an array of N- or C-terminal deletion mutants of the protein.

Gene regulation systems are mimicked by simple quantitative detection of non-nucleic acid molecular targets such as protein and metabolite. Here, we describe a one-tube, one-step real-time quantitative detection methodology for isothermal signal amplification of those targets. Using this system, real-time quantitative detection of thrombin and streptomycin, which were used as examples for protein and metabolite targets, was successfully demonstrated with detection limits of at most 50 pM and 75 nM, respectively.
