Background And Aim: In recent years, there has been a rise in cryptogenic hepatocellular carcinoma (c-HCC) cases in Japan, posing a detection challenge due to an unknown etiology. This study aims to enhance diagnostic strategies for c-HCC by analyzing its characteristics and exploring current opportunities for detection.

Methods: A retrospective study was conducted from April 2012 to March 2022, enrolling 372 newly diagnosed hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients.

Saving a hopeless tooth with a four-wall bone defect: A case report.

Background: Recombinant human fibroblast growth factor-2 (rhFGF-2) has been shown to effectively promote the formation of new periodontal tissues, and its efficacy has been demonstrated in clinical settings. Moreover, the clinical and radiographic outcomes in the treatment of periodontal infrabony defects can be improved by using rhFGF-2 in combination with a bone substitute. Here, we present a case of four-wall bone defect in a tooth treated by combination regenerative therapy using rhFGF-2 and beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP).

The Risk of Metastatic Recurrence after Non-Curative Endoscopic Resection with Negative Deep Margins for Early Colorectal Cancer: Two-Center Retrospective Cohort Study.

Introduction: Non-curative endoscopic resection of T1 colorectal cancer (CRC) carries a substantial risk of recurrence. However, previous studies have reported a significant proportion of cases in which the deep margin of endoscopic resection was positive for cancer due to the technical difficulties of colorectal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). With the advancement of endoscopic technology and techniques resulting in the reduction of positive resection margins, it is important to reassess the long-term prognosis and major risk factors for recurrence in cases of negative deep margins.

Electronic Structure of Isolated Graphene Nanoribbons in Solution Revealed by Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy.

Structurally well-defined graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are nanostructures with unique optoelectronic properties. In the liquid phase, strong aggregation typically hampers the assessment of their intrinsic properties. Recently we reported a novel type of GNRs, decorated with aliphatic side chains, yielding dispersions consisting mostly of isolated GNRs.

Objective: Human gingival epithelial cells (HGECs) function as a mechanical barrier against invasion by pathogenic organisms through epithelial cell-cell junction complexes, which are complex components of integrin. Integrins play an important role in the protective functions of HGECs. Human periodontal ligament (HPL) cells regulate periodontal homeostasis.

COVID-19-Triggered Acute Liver Failure and Rhabdomyolysis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

COVID-19 is primarily known for its respiratory tract involvement, often leading to severe pneumonia and exacerbation of underlying diseases. However, emerging evidence suggests that COVID-19 can result in multiorgan failure, affecting organs beyond the respiratory system. We present the case of a 62-year-old male with COVID-19 who developed acute liver failure (ALF) and rhabdomyolysis in the absence of respiratory failure.

Rare root canal morphology of maxillary second molars: A report of three cases.

Key Clinical Message: Endodontists should be aware that some maxillary second molars can have more than three roots. If any unusual anatomical features are detected during dental radiography or endodontic procedures, it is necessary to conduct cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanning to prevent procedural mishaps.

Abstract: CBCT can provide three-dimensional reconstructed images of the root canal system.

Identification and Quantification of Jaundice by Trans-Conjunctiva Optical Imaging Using a Human Brain-like Algorithm: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Jaundice is caused by excess circulating bilirubin, known as hyperbilirubinemia. This symptom is sometimes caused by a critical hepatobiliary disorder, and is generally identified as yellowish sclera when bilirubin levels increase more than 3 mg/dL. It is difficult to identify jaundice accurately, especially via telemedicine.

Results of the interim analysis of a prospective, multicenter, observational study of small subepithelial lesions in the stomach.

Objectives: Long-term outcomes of gastric subepithelial lesions have not been elucidated. To reveal the natural history, we initiated a prospective, 10-year follow-up of patients with small (≤20 mm) gastric subepithelial lesions in September 2014. Here, we report the results of an interim analysis of a prospective observational study.

Long-term outcomes of patients with primary intestinal follicular lymphoma managed with watch-and-wait strategy.

Patients with primary intestinal follicular lymphoma are often followed-up without a specific treatment, and this approach is called the "watch-and-wait approach." However, the long-term outcomes of this patient group have not been sufficiently investigated. We enrolled patients with primary intestinal follicular lymphoma who were diagnosed before 2016 and managed with the watch-and-wait approach in 20 institutions.

The Characteristics and Prognosis of Alpha-Fetoprotein and Des-Gamma-Carboxy Prothrombin Double-Negative Hepatocellular Carcinoma at Baseline in Higher BCLC Stages.

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and des-gamma-carboxyprothrombin (DCP) are widely used as tumor markers to diagnose hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Some advanced HCCs demonstrate neither AFP nor DCP. This study investigated the characteristics and prognosis of AFP (<20 ng/mL) and DCP (<40 mAU/ml) double-negative HCC (DNHC) in higher-stage HCC.

Analysis of fecal microbial profiles in dogs with intestinal lymphangiectasia.

Intestinal lymphangiectasia (IL) is a common complication in dogs. This study analyzed intestinal microbiota using 16S rRNA amplicon analysis as candidate factors that strongly influence the small intestinal lymphatic vessels in dogs with and without IL. Twelve dogs were included, of which six were diagnosed with lymphoplasmacytic enteritis, four with small-cell lymphoma, and two with large-cell lymphoma.

ez-ADiCon: A novel glyco-remodeling based strategy that enables preparation of homogenous antibody-drug conjugates via one-step enzymatic transglycosylation with payload-preloaded bi-antennary glycan complexes.

The conserved N-linked glycan at the Fc domain of recombinant monoclonal antibodies is an attractive target for site-specific payload conjugation for preparation of homogenous antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). Here, we report a novel ADC constructing strategy, named "ez-ADiCon", that is achieved by one-step enzymatic transglycosylation of a payload-preloaded bi-antennary glycan oxazoline onto a deglycosylated antibody. In this method, a mixture of different glycoforms of the Fc-glycan is replaced with a pre-defined payload-linked glycan.

[Small duct primary sclerosing cholangitis diagnosed after fever and liver disorder: a case report].

A woman in her 10s presented to our hospital with persistent fever and liver disorder and was admitted. It was considered that her fever was due to infectious, hematological, and collagen diseases; however, these diseases were excluded. Upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed gastritis and indicated inflammatory bowel disease involvement.

Objective: This study aimed to determine the regulatory mechanism of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (BM-MSC) differentiation mediated by humoral factors derived from human periodontal ligament (HPL) cells and human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs). We analyzed histone deacetylase (HDAC) expression and activity involved in BM-MSC differentiation and determined their regulatory effects in co-cultures of BM-MSCs with HPL cells or HGFs.

Background: BM-MSCs can differentiate into various cell types and can, thus, be used in periodontal regenerative therapy.

Effects of proportions of carbohydrates and fats in diets on mucin concentration and bile composition in gallbladder of dogs.

The associations of diet compositions with mucin secretion in gallbladder have not been investigated in dogs. This study aimed to examine the effects of a low-carbohydrate diet (LC) and a low-fat diet (LF) on bile mucin concentration and composition of gallbladder bile in six clinically healthy beagle dogs. After feeding of both diets, the bile mucin concentration was significantly decreased.

Chronic Active Epstein-Barr Virus Infection Indistinguishable from Autoimmune Hepatitis: A Case Report.

Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus (CAEBV) infection is a rare disease, mainly affecting children, typically characterized by persistent infectious mononucleosis (IM)-like symptoms. We describe an adult case of CAEBV without IM-like symptoms, which was indistinguishable from autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). A 60-year-old woman with liver damage was diagnosed with AIH (International Diagnostic Score: 16 points).

Outcomes of Patients with Left-Sided Obstructive Colorectal Cancer: Comparison between Self-Expandable Metallic Stent and Other Treatment Methods.

Introduction: This multi-institutional retrospective study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of preoperative self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) placement for patients with left-sided obstructive colorectal cancer (OCRC).

Methods: Overall, 520 consecutive patients who received treatment for OCRC were enrolled. Of these, the data of 253 patients who underwent primary tumour resection for left-sided OCRC were reviewed.

Intestinal lymphangiectasia (IL) is often observed in dogs with chronic small intestinal diseases. Hypoplasia of the lymphatic vessel due to decreased lymphangiogenesis, which has been suggested in human idiopathic IL, may contribute to the pathogenesis of canine IL. This study aimed to evaluate the diameter and number of lymphatic vessels in full-thickness small intestinal specimens of dogs with IL.

Surgical management and outcomes of obstructive colorectal cancer in elderly patients: A multi-institutional retrospective study.

Background: The outcomes and prognostic factors of elderly patients with obstructive colorectal cancer are unknown. This was the focus of our multi-institutional retrospective study.

Methods: Medical records of 520 patients (elderly [group E, aged ≥75 years, n = 271]; and nonelderly [group NE, aged <75 years, n = 249]) who received treatment for obstructive colorectal cancer in 2008 to 2018 at 14 leading hospitals in Kagawa prefecture (Japan) were reviewed.
