The term serial engagement was introduced to describe the ability of a single peptide, bound to a MHC molecule, to sequentially interact with TCRs within the contact region between a T cell and an APC. In addition to ligands on surfaces, soluble multivalent ligands can serially engage cell surface receptors with sites on the ligand, binding and dissociating from receptors many times before all ligand sites become free and the ligand leaves the surface. To evaluate the role of serial engagement in Syk activation, we use a detailed mathematical model of the initial signaling cascade that is triggered when FcepsilonRI is aggregated on mast cells by multivalent Ags.

Since the discovery of miRNAs in plants in 2002 much has been learned about the function of these small regulatory RNAs.

A study was undertaken to identify the work stressors among male and female weavers (N=516) in powerloom and handloom and examine the association of work stressors with the prevalence of work related musculo-skeletal disorders (MSDs). Physical and psychosocial stresses of work, job diagnostics, hazards of workplace, working environment and MSDs prevalence were assessed. There is high prevalence of MSDs among weavers.

The method involves the reaction of boric acid with urea, wherein the relative proportions of the two have been varied over a wide range. Synthesis with a high proportion of urea yields a product with a majority of 1-4 layers.

The design preserves the capability of computer programmable amplitude and phase modulation of femtosecond laser pulses. An additional application of genetic algorithm optimization approach for compressing a stretched pulse is also demonstrated for such a pulse shaper.

In a genetic screen in a drnl-2 background, we isolated a loss-of-function allele in miR319a (miR319a(129)). Previously, miR319a has been postulated to play a role in leaf development based on the dramatic curled-leaf phenotype of plants that ectopically express miR319a (jaw-D). miR319a(129) mutants exhibit defects in petal and stamen development; petals are narrow and short, and stamens exhibit defects in anther development.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy reveal the composition to be close to BCN. The X-ray diffraction pattern, high-resolution electron microscopy images and Raman spectrum indicate the presence of graphite-type layers with low sheet-to-sheet registry.

For a series of rhodamine dyes, two-photon absorption (TPA) and two-photon fluorescence (TPF) have been performed in different solvents. Solvent-dependent TPA spectra of these dyes were measured with open aperture z-scan method and compared to their respective single-photon spectra at equivalent energies. In the TPA spectra, relative peak intensities and positions are highly solvent dependent, which could be a result of vibronic couplings that depend on solvent environment.

This solvothermal route, not only ensures inert atmosphere, which is strictly required for the synthesis of phase pure InP quantum dots but also allows a reaction temperature as high as 430 degrees C, which is otherwise impossible to achieve using a typical solution chemistry; the higher reaction temperature makes the reaction more facile. This method also has a judicious control over the size of the quantum dots and thus in tuning the bandgap.

This article discusses the impact of natalizumab induction and maintenance therapy on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of CD patients. Two natalizumab phase III studies were evaluated: the Efficacy of Natalizumab in Crohn's Disease Response and Remission (ENCORE) study evaluated the HRQoL of CD patients during 12 weeks of natalizumab induction therapy, and the Evaluation of Natalizumab As Continuous Therapy (ENACT-2) trial evaluated the effect of natalizumab maintenance therapy on HRQoL for a period of 48 weeks past a 12-week induction period (ENACT-1).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLigand-induced receptor aggregation is a well-known mechanism for initiating intracellular signals but oligomerization of distal signaling molecules may also be required for signal propagation. Formation of complexes containing oligomers of the transmembrane adaptor protein, linker for the activation of T cells (LAT), has been identified as critical in mast cell and T cell activation mediated by immune response receptors. Cross-linking of LAT arises from the formation of a 2:1 complex between the adaptor Grb2 and the nucleotide exchange factor SOS1, which bridges two LAT molecules through the interaction of the Grb2 SH2 domain with a phosphotyrosine on LAT.

Special agents for protein capture: Iterative in situ click chemistry (see scheme for the tertiary ligand screen) and the one-bead-one-compound method for the creation of a peptide library enable the fragment-based assembly of selective high-affinity protein-capture agents. The resulting ligands are water-soluble and stable chemically, biochemically, and thermally. They can be produced in gram quantities through copper(I)-catalyzed cycloaddition.

In contrast, our results based on the lattice parameter tuning in a Zn(x)Cd(1-x)S alloy nanocrystal system achieves approximately 7.5% Mn(2+) doping in a wurtzite nanocrystal, such a concentration being substantially higher compared to earlier reports even for nanocrystal hosts with the "favorable" zinc-blende structure.

Harbours are heavily stressed coastal habitats characterised by high concentration of contaminant and low diversity of benthic community. The west coast of India harbours most of the major harbours compared to the east coast. Very few studies have compared the macrobenthic community between different Indian harbours.

We have previously shown that evolutionarily conserved alteration/deficiency in activation (Ada) protein associates with and promotes estrogen receptor (ER)-mediated target gene expression. Here, we examined the role of endogenous Ada3 to recruit histone acetyl transferases (HAT) to an ER-responsive promoter and its role in estrogen-dependent cell proliferation and malignant phenotype. Using a combination of glycerol gradient cosedimentation and immunoprecipitation analyses, we show that Ada3, ER, and three distinct HATs [p300, (p300/CBP-associated factor) PCAF, and general control nonrepressed 5 (Gcn5)] are present in a complex.

Devices based on optical technology for high speed communication networks require materials with large nonlinear optical response in the ultrafast regime. Nonlinear optical materials have also attracted wide attention as potential candidates for the protection of optical sensors and eyes while handling lasers. Optical limiters have a constant transmittance at low input influence and a decrease in transmittance at higher fluences and are based on a variety of mechanisms such as nonlinear refraction, nonlinear scattering, multiphoton absorption and free carrier absorption.

To identify novel genes in petal and stamen development, a genetic screen was carried out for enhancers of the unusual B class mutant pistillata-5 (pi-5). In pi-5 flowers, second whorl organs develop as sepals rather than petals, but third whorl stamens are normal. One pi-5 enhancer, dornröschen-like-2 (drnl-2), results in third whorl positions developing as filamentous organs.

We have synthesized CdSe nanocrystals using CdO precursor in a noncoordinating solvent and studied the effect of the reaction temperature on the size and optical properties of the nanocrystals.
