Prevalence of proximate risk factors of active tuberculosis in latent tuberculosis infection: A cross-sectional study from South India.

The prevalence of proximate risk factors for active tuberculosis (TB) in areas of high prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is not clearly understood. We aimed at assessing the prevalence of non-communicable multi-morbidity focusing on diabetes mellitus (DM), malnutrition, and hypertension (HTN) as common risk factors of LTBI progressing to active TB. In a cross-sectional study, 2,351 adults (45% male and 55% female) from villages in the Kancheepuram district of South India were enrolled between 2013 and 2020.

Degradation Mechanisms of Metal-Supported Solid Oxide Cells and Countermeasures: A Review.

Metal-supported oxide cells (MSCs) are considered as the third-generation solid oxide cells (SOCs) succeeding electrolyte-supported (first generation) and anode-supported (second generation) cells, which have gained much attention and progress in the past decade. The use of metal supports and advanced technical methods (such as infiltrated electrodes) has vastly improved cell performance, especially with its rapid startup ability and power density, showing a significant decrease in raw materials cost. However, new degradation mechanisms appeared, limiting the further improvement of the performance and lifetime.

Fine needle aspiration diagnosis of pilomatrixoma. A case report.

Background: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) diagnosis of pilomatrixoma is rare. The cytologic presentation can be mistaken for squamous cell carcinoma because of high cellularity, high nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio and presence of anucleate squames.

Background: The unexpected intraoperative finding of a cancerous gallbladder has become particularly problematic, because cancer recurs rapidly after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It would be desirable to identify the patients of greatest risk for gallbladder cancer before operation. After several elderly patients presenting with acute cholecystitis were found to have gallbladder cancer, we performed the following study.

Multicentric primary adenocarcinomas of the midgut: the first case report.

Multicentric adenocarcinomas of the midgut have not been described; even multiple adenocarcinomas limited to the small intestine are extremely uncommon, with only 14 cases reported in the literature. We report a case of multicentric synchronous involvement of the entire midgut with adenocarcinoma in a 52-yr-old Polish woman who had more than 30 lesions extending from duodenum to mid-transverse colon. There was no family history of cancer.

Pathology review in an early prostate cancer detection program: results from the American Cancer Society-National Prostate Cancer Detection Project.

Biopsy materials obtained in the American Cancer Society National Prostate Cancer Detection Project were reviewed at the Central Pathology Laboratory at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Of 265 cases submitted, 177 were diagnosed as prostatic carcinoma, 7 as prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), 13 as atypical glands or atypical hyperplasia, and the remaining 68 were benign hyperplasias. Irrespective of the means of detectin or the grading system used (Gleason or WHO-Mostofi), a large majority of the cancers were detected as low-grade tumors.

Gastric syphilis: a disease with multiple manifestations.

The resurgence of syphilis in the United States is effecting all areas of medical care. We describe a young female presenting with symptoms of peptic ulcer disease who failed to respond to H2-receptor antagonist therapy. After further evaluation, she was diagnosed with gastric syphilis and responded well to penicillin.

Endoscopic ultrasonography verifies effect on endoscopic treatment of reflux in dogs and man.

We have previously reported that endoscopic sclerosis of the gastric cardia is an effective treatment for experimental gastroesophageal reflux in dogs. The histologic effect of endoscopic sclerosis is limited to the proximal stomach; mucosal deformity provides endoscopic evidence of sclerosis, and the intramural effects are shown by ultrasonographic technique. This report describes histologic and ultrasonographic results in the dogs at the completion of endoscopic sclerosis.

Primary cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis: report of seven cases.

We report seven cases of primary cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis. There were five males and two females, ranging in age from 42-65 years (mean 57.7 years).

Benign cystic ovarian teratomas with prostatic tissue: a report of two cases.

We report two cases of the rare occurrence of prostatic epithelium in ovarian teratomas with associated transitional epithelium in one of the cases. This association of prostatic tissue with urothelium tends to reinforce the well-established embryogenetic derivation of the prostate from the urogenital sinus. Local hormonal events may influence the formation of prostatic tissue from female urothelium.

Composite (adenocarcinoid) tumors of the gastrointestinal tract.

Tumors of the gut with composite features of both adenocarcinoma and carcinoid have been recognized mainly in the appendix. There also have been isolated reports of similar tumors arising from other parts of the gastrointestinal tract. It is generally concluded that these tumors have better prognosis than adenocarcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract.

The nodular form of local hepatic tuberculosis. A review.

Local hepatic tuberculosis without active pulmonary or miliary tuberculosis is an uncommon diagnosis. Even less common is the finding of tuberculoma or tuberculous liver abscess without clinical evidence of tuberculosis elsewhere. Since 1950, 21 cases of isolated tuberculoma or tuberculous abscess of the liver have been reported in the world literature.

Retroperitoneal teratoma with fetuses.

Teratomas occur infrequently in retroperitoneal areas and are usually benign. They may contain highly organized structures like digits and limbs. The presence of a well-formed fetus in teratomas is extremely rare.

The demonstration of papilloma virus in cervical dysplasia and/or neoplasia.

Thirty-three random biopsy specimens of uterine cervix were studied by immunoperoxidase technique to evaluate the presence of HPV antigen in dysplastic and neoplastic cells. Four cases of mild dysplasia, nine cases of moderate to severe dysplasia, two cases of carcinoma in situ and one case of invasive carcinoma were associated with condylomatous lesions. Intranuclear dark-brown precipitates were observed in superficial and intermediate zones of the dysplastic epithelium.
