The limited self-repair capacity of articular cartilage is a challenge for healing injuries. While mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are a promising approach for tissue regeneration, the criteria for selecting a suitable cell source remain undefined. To propose a molecular criterion, dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) with a -negative expression pattern and bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSCs), which actively express genes, were differentiated towards chondrocytes in 3D pellets, employing a two-step protocol.

In vitro, the use of neural cell lines could facilitate the study of this disease. By creating a cell model of GM1 gangliosidosis on the SH-SY5Y human nerve cell line, it is possible to understand the main role of this enzyme in breaking down lipid substrate and other pathophysiologic phenomena this disease.

Increased levels of adhesion molecules in cardiac tissue serve as prognostic markers for coronary artery occlusion risk. Given the antioxidant properties of bilirubin and its inverse correlation with atherosclerosis, this study aimed to assess the beneficial effects of bilirubin on atherosclerotic indices and heart structure in high-fat diet-fed diabetic rats with atherosclerosis.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), like graphene, exhibits outstanding physical and chemical properties, making it a promising candidate for water treatment. We employed Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations to establish an accurate modeling of Na and Cl permeation through hydrogen passivated nanopores in graphene and h-BN membranes.

We investigated the repercussions of aberrant activation of these signaling pathways on kidney development. HEK-293 cells were subjected to AHR and Wnt activators and inhibitors for 3 and 24 h.

Methods: Three specific anti-HER2 phage antibodies were produced from a scFv-library using phage display technology. The cell binding capacities of the antibodies were assessed via FACS analysis.
Objective: Identification of patients at high risk of aggressive prostate cancer is a major clinical challenge. With the view of developing artificial intelligence-based methods for identification of these patients, we are constructing a comprehensive clinical database including 7448 prostate cancer (PCa) Danish patients. In this paper we provide an epidemiological description and patients' trajectories of this retrospective observational population, to contribute to the understanding of the characteristics and pathways of PCa patients in Denmark.

Methods: UC was induced in 37 Sprague Dawley rats by administration of a 2 mL enema of 3% acetic acid (AA).
Nanopore devices based on graphene and h-BN heterostructures show outstanding electrical and physical characteristics for high throughput label-free DNA sequencing. On top of their suitability for DNA sequencing with the ionic current method, G/h-BN nanostructures are promising for DNA sequencing by employing the in-plane electronic current. The influence of the nucleotide/device interaction on the in-plane current has been widely explored for static-optimized geometries.

Regarding the observed protective effects of bilirubin, as a potential endogenous antioxidant/anti-inflammatory compound, against DKD progression, we planned to evaluate the effects of bilirubin administration on endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and inflammation in type 2 diabetic (T2D) rats fed high-fat diet (HFD). In this regard, thirty 8-week adult male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups (n = 6).

Recent methods based on deep learning convolutional neural networks have been very effective, since they are readily adaptive to biomedical applications and outperform other competitive segmentation methods. Inspired by the U-Net, we designed a deep learning network with an innovative architecture, hereafter referred to as AID-U-Net.

Objective: Diabetic auditory neuropathy (DAN) is a common complication of diabetes that seriously affects the quality of life in patients. In this study, we investigate the role of folic acid in the treatment of DAN in an experimental rat model.
Methods: Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were equally divided into four groups: group 1, normal; group 2, diabetic rats; and groups 3 and 4, diabetic rats treated with folic acid (40 and 80 mg/kg, respectively).

Background: Receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 1 (ROR1) is an oncofetal antigen expressed on many types of cancer cells, but not normal adult cells. ROR1 antigen contributes to cancer development and progression by several signaling pathways. ROR1 expression has been associated with tumor growth, survival, and metastasis.

Although this could be alleviated by regular screening, only a small percentage of those at risk are screened comprehensively, due to shortcomings in accuracy and patient acceptance. To address these challenges, we designed an artificial intelligence (AI)-empowered wireless video endoscopic capsule that surpasses the performance of the existing solutions by featuring, among others: (1) real-time image processing using onboard deep neural networks (DNN), (2) enhanced visualization of the mucous layer by deploying both white-light and narrow-band imaging, (3) on-the-go task modification and DNN update using over-the-air-programming and (4) bi-directional communication with patient's personal electronic devices to report important findings.

However, no previous algorithm using routine blood markers has proven to be clinically appropriate in primary care. We present a novel approach based on artificial intelligence, able to predict significant liver fibrosis in low-prevalence populations using routinely available patient data.

On this account, we propose a nanostructure based on a nanopore in graphene/h-BN/graphene heterostructures as a viable approach for in-plane electrical detection. The insulating h-BN layer changes the charge transport to the quantum tunneling regime, which is very sensitive to the electrostatic interactions induced by nucleotides during their translocation through the nanopore.

In large bowel investigations using endoscopic capsules and upon detection of significant findings, physicians require the location of those findings for a follow-up therapeutic colonoscopy. To cater to this need, we propose a model based on tracking feature points in consecutive frames of videos retrieved from colon capsule endoscopy investigations. By locally approximating the colon as a cylinder, we obtained both the displacement and the orientation of the capsule using geometrical assumptions and by setting priors on both physical properties of the intestine and the image sample frequency of the endoscopic capsule.

In clinical practice, facial erythema of patients with diabetes is evaluated based on subjective observations of visible redness, which often goes unnoticed leading to microangiopathic complications. To address this major shortcoming, we designed a contactless, non-invasive diagnostic point-of-care-device (POCD) consisting of a digital camera and a screen.
