- Leptospirosis is a serious infectious disease leading to around 60,000 deaths annually due to misdiagnosis, and this study is the first to analyze pathogenic Leptospira diversity in Cuba through whole-genome sequencing of patient samples from 2008-2012.
- Nineteen blood samples were collected and compared with historical strains used for vaccine development, leading to the identification of four core genome clonal groups, predominantly L. interrogans, with associations to local animal hosts as significant sources of infection.
- The findings highlight the prevalence of the serogroup Ballum in recent cases, emphasizing a potential vaccination gap since the current vaccine does not target this serogroup, informing public health strategies in Cuba.
