Background: Autologous fat grafting is a widely adopted surgical technique in both the reconstructive and aesthetic fields. This study aimed to compare centrifuged lipoaspirates harvested and refined by the Coleman technique with noncentrifuged lipoaspirates in terms of cell number and viability, phenotypic profile, and clonogenic and proliferative potential of adipose-derived stem cell (ADSC) populations.

Methods: For each patient, both a centrifuged sample using the Coleman's technique and a noncentrifuged sample of adipose tissue were collected.

Critical size segmental bone defects are still a major challenge in reconstructive orthopedic surgery. Transplantation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) has been proposed as an alternative to autogenous bone graft, as MSC can be expanded in vitro and induced to differentiate into bone-regenerating osteoblasts by several bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP). Ex-FABP, an extracellular fatty acid binding lipocalin, is physiologically expressed by differentiating chicken chondrocytes and myoblasts. Its expression is enhanced after cell treatment with inflammatory stimuli and repressed by anti-inflammatory agents, behaving as an acute phase protein.
