Environmental harm assessment of a wastewater discharge from Hammerfest LNG: a study with biomarkers in mussels (Mytilus sp.) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).

Biologically treated wastewater (WW) from the Hammerfest LNG (liquefied natural gas) plant is discharged to the sea. A study using biomarkers in mussels and Atlantic cod was performed to examine whether this discharge meets a zero harmful emission requirement. Caging of mussels close to the outfall and exposure of mussels and fish to WW in the laboratory were conducted, and a suite of contaminant responsive markers was assessed in exposed animals.

Seasonal variation of histopathological and histochemical markers of PAH exposure in blue mussel (Mytilus edulis L.).

The aim of this work was to study seasonal variation of histopathological and histochemical markers in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis L.) exposed to pyrogenic PAH contaminants. Mussels were collected in January, June, September and October from a sampling site in the vicinity of the discharge from an aluminium smelter and from a clean reference site.

Scoring approach based on fish biomarkers applied to French river monitoring.

The aim was to apply a multimarker scoring approach as complementary to freshwater monitoring programmes carried out by the Water Agency Adour-Garonne. Fish (chub, barbel and trout) were collected in 11 sites in rivers in south-west France. Five biomarkers of response were measured either in muscle or brain for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and in liver for glutathione S-transferase, catalase and 7-ethoxyresorufine O-deethylase.
