Breast cancer (BC) is the most common life-threatening malignancy amongst women with high incidence worldwide. In Egypt, it is the most known malignancy amongst females. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) participates in breast tumors' invasiveness, and metastasis, but the process is poorly understood.

Epigenetic alterations have emerged as fundamental players in development and progression of breast cancer (BC). A hypoxic tumour microenvironment regulates the stemness phenotype in breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs). The aim of this study was to investigate Znhit1 and HIF-2α gene expression in breast cancer tissues as well as their relation to CSCs markers LGR5, ALDH1A1 and β-catenin in tissue and serum of BC patients.

Bioactive compounds were extracted from a locally available brittle star; Ophiocoma dentata, collected from the Red Sea, Egypt. Two new sesquiterpenoids; 8, 11-epoxy-9(15)-himachaladiene-4-ol (O8-ophiocomane) and, 11-epoxy-9(15)-himachaladiene-4-ol (O7-ophiocomane) were isolated and characterized using appropriate techniques. Structure elucidation was estimated via 1D NMR, 2D NMR, FT-IR and mass spectroscopy analyses.

Background: Altered cadherin expression plays a vital role in tumorigenesis, angiogenesis and tumor progression. However, the function of protocadherin 17 (PCDH17) in breast cancer remains unclear.

Objective: Our target is to explore PCDH17 gene expression in breast carcinoma tissues and its relation to serum angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2), carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX) and % of circulating CD34+ cells in breast cancer patients (BCPs).

Targeting the thioredoxin/thioredoxin reductase (Trx/TrxR) system is a promising strategy to overcome cancer resistance to conventional therapy. The present study investigated the effect of curcumin on the Trx/TrxR system either alone or in combination with chemotherapy, or radiotherapy in human MCF-7 breast cancer cells seeded in 2 and 3D culture systems. Cell viability, thioredoxin reductase 1 (TrxR1) activity, and the genetic expression of Trx, TrxR1, Bcl2 and BAX genes were studied.

Telomerase is a ribonucloprotein enzyme that appears to play a role in carcinogenesis. To understand the regulatory mechanisms which govern telomerase activity, we used telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) to quantitate and compare telomerase activity in cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with and without INF-gamma in breast cancer patients. Serum levels of IFN-gamma and vitamin-A were also measured to look for a possible influence of these chemotherapeutic agents on telomerase activity.
