Article Synopsis
  • Ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) is a rare genetic disorder causing neurological issues, blood vessel irregularities, and a weakened immune system, particularly noted in Latin American patients.
  • A study involving 218 patients revealed that the average age for symptoms and diagnosis is about 1 year and 5 years, respectively, with common recurrent airway infections linked to IgA deficiency.
  • The study found a mean survival of 24.2 years, with a 20-year survival rate of 52.6%, and higher mortality rates in females and those with low IgG levels, highlighting the importance of assessing immune function in AT patients.

Background: In the present study, resveratrol was used to prepare complexes of cerium and nanoceria, also coated with gold (CeO2@Au core-shells) to improve the surface interactions in physiological conditions.

Methods: The CeO2@Au core-shells were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and ζ potential.

Results: The experiment was led to the successful synthesis of nanosized CeO2@Au core-shells, although agglomeration of particles caused the distribution of the larger particles.

Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) is nonfermenting, Gram-negative bacteria known to cause high morbidity and mortality. They commonly affect patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and are often missed in those without, despite being fatal if left untreated. We report a case of cepacia syndrome in a 42-year-old, immunocompetent man without CF who initially presented with sepsis secondary to pneumonia.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study aimed to investigate the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on Brazilian patients with Inborn Errors of Immunity (IEI), focusing on their clinical outcomes and factors influencing the infection.
  • - In a multicenter study of 121 patients, the majority experienced mild or asymptomatic cases, with serious outcomes primarily linked to older age and specific comorbidities (like bronchiectasis and cardiopathy) rather than the type of IEI itself.
  • - Despite most infections being mild, the case fatality rate for these patients was higher than the general population, highlighting the need for targeted care in individuals with IEI.

Maternal immunization with pertussis acellular vaccine (Tdap) is an intervention that provides protection to newborns. However, it has been reported that high maternal antibody levels may adversely affect the immune response of infants after active immunization. In this study, we evaluated neonatal passive acquisition of pertussis-specific antibodies and their influence on the neonatal cell-mediated immune response.

Bacterial sepsis remains a major cause of mortality and blood cultures are the gold standard of laboratory diagnosis even though they lack sensitivity in neonates. Culturenegative sepsis, also known as clinical sepsis, has long been considered a diagnosis in neonatal intensive care units because, as well as culture-positive infants, culture-negative neonates have worse prognosis in comparison with non-infected ones. Quantitative amplifications are used to detect bacterial infections in neonates but results are considered only in a qualitative way (positive or negative).

Objective:: To investigate the transmission of anti-Staphylococcus aureus (Sa) IgG, IgG1 and IgG2 via placental transfer and the transfer of IgA via the colostrum according to maternal Sa carrier status at delivery.

Methods:: We evaluated anti-Sa IgG, IgG1 and IgG2 in maternal and cord sera and IgA in colostrum from a case (n=49, Sa+) and a control group (n=98, Sa-).

Results:: Of the 250 parturients analyzed for this study, 49 were nasally colonized with S.

Treg cells are crucial to prevent immune dysregulation, but little is known about the frequency of these cells in neonates, particularly in very/moderate and late preterm newborns studied as separate groups. The CD4(+) CD25(hi) CD127(lo) FOXP3(+) Treg population was phenotypically characterized to assess maturation markers and gut-homing integrins by flow cytometry in the cord blood of healthy preterm newborns born at 30-33(6/7) gestation weeks (Group 1), at 34-36(6/7) gestation weeks (Group 2) and term newborns born at 37-41 gestation weeks (Group 3), compared to healthy adults. An inverse correlation of the Treg percentage and gestational age was found, with significantly higher frequencies in Group 1 compared to Groups 2 and 3 and in Group 2 compared to Group 3, and significantly higher Treg frequencies and numbers in the neonates compared to the adults.

Objective: To monitor the bacterial load in newborns with proven infections on the day of admission, 48 h and 7 days after treatment.

Methods: Real-time PCR (qPCR) targeting the 16S rDNA.

Results: The study recruited 17 newborns and the bacterial load was in general low (<50 CFU/mL).

Ephedra is a dioecious shrub that belongs to the Ephedraceae family of gymnosperms. Almost all commercial applications of Ephedra extracts are derived from the ephedrine alkaloids found in the evergreen stems. The purpose of this study was to compare chemical components (total alkaloid, ephedrine, total phenol, total flavonoid and tannin) of Ephedra major plants during May to October months.

Background: Sarcoidosis is an idiopathic granulomatous disease with pathologic and immunologic features similar to tuberculosis. Routine histologic staining and culture fail to identify infectious agents. An alternative means for investigating a role of infectious agents in human pathogenesis involves molecular analysis of pathologic tissues for microbial nucleic acids, as well as recognition of microbial antigens by the host immune system.

Studies of sarcoidosis immunology have noted oligoclonal T cell populations, suggesting cell-mediated immunity that is antigen-specific. Sarcoidosis immunology and pathology are most similar to mycobacterial infections. Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in mice and humans reflects T helper 1 (Th1) immune responses to multiple cell wall and secreted antigens.

Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disease of unknown etiology, characterized by a Th-1 immunophenotype. Although humoral immune responses by sarcoidosis subjects to mycobacterial proteins have been detected, mycobacterial antigens capable of inducing cellular immune responses in sarcoidosis subjects have not been reported. We used the enzyme-linked immunospot assay to assess for recognition of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis mycolyl transferase, Antigen 85A, by peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 25 sarcoidosis subjects, 22 PPD- (purified protein derivative) healthy volunteers, and 16 PPD+ healthy subjects.

Sarcoidosis is an enigmatic disease with a pathology similar to that of tuberculosis. We detected Th-1 immune responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis ESAT-6 and KatG peptides from peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 15/26 sarcoidosis, 1/24 purified-protein-derivative-negative (PPD-) (P < 0.0001, Fisher's exact test), and 7/8 PPD-positive (PPD+) subjects (P = 0.
