Use of Bacillus-siamensis-inoculated biochar to decrease uptake of dibutyl phthalate in leafy vegetables.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a frequently detected farmland contaminant that is harmful to the environment and human health. In this study, a DBP-degrading endophytic Bacillus siamensis strain T7 was immobilized in rice husk-derived biochar for bioremediation of DBP-polluted agricultural soils. The effects of this microbe-biochar composite on the soil prokaryotic community and the mechanism by which it regulates DBP degradation, were also investigated.

Large bowel obstruction secondary to adhesive bands.

Large bowel obstruction (LBO) is most commonly due to malignancy, volvulus, hernia, diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease. LBO due to adhesions is unusual. A literature review was conducted which revealed that only a few such cases have been reported.

Expression Profiling of Proliferation and Apoptotic Markers along the Adenoma-Carcinoma Sequence in Familial Adenomatous Polyposis Patients.

Introduction. Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) patients have a germline mutation in the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene. The APC protein interacts with beta-catenin, resulting in the activation of the Wnt signalling pathway.

Expression of EGFR, HER2, phosphorylated ERK and phosphorylated MEK in colonic neoplasms of familial adenomatous polyposis patients.

Purpose: The expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is associated with poor prognosis in sporadic colorectal carcinoma (CRC). EGFR inhibitors are approved for the treatment of refractory CRC. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of EGFR and HER2 and downstream extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK) and mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) in non-neoplastic colonic mucosa, adenomas and carcinomas from familial adenomatous polyposis coli (FAP) patients, exploring the expression along the adenoma-carcinoma sequence.

Open femoral hernia repair: one skin incision for all.

Background: Femoral hernias are relatively uncommon, however they are the most common incarcerated abdominal hernia, with strangulation of a viscus carrying significant mortality. Classically three approaches are described to open femoral hernia repair: Lockwood's infra-inguinal, Lotheissen's trans-inguinal and McEvedy's high approach. Each approach describes a separate skin incision and dissection to access the femoral sac.

T-tube jejunostomy feeding after pancreatic surgery: a safe adjunct.

Objective: Patients with pancreatic disease are often malnourished because of biliary and gastric outlet obstruction or the catabolic response to sepsis or cancer. In this study, we reviewed our experience of providing enteral nutrition through a T-tube jejunostomy in these patients.

Methods: The records of a consecutive series of 36 patients who had undergone pancreatic operations during the last 4 years were reviewed.

Supergastrinoma: simultaneous peptic ulceration of esophagus, stomach, and small intestine.

Synchronous involvement of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine by peptic ulceration has not been previously described in the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Two patients presented with abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, and dysphagia while on acid suppressants. Fasting hypergastrinemia was confirmed.

Retroperitoneal perforation of the appendix presenting as right thigh abscess.

A case of retroperitoneal perforation of the appendix presenting with a thigh abscess is described. The patient presented with pyrexia (38 degrees C) and abdominal and right thigh pain. There was tenderness in the right loin.
