A 49-year-old male with no comorbidities presented with acute colicky lower abdominal pain for one day, alongside three months of intermittent abdominal pain, loose stools, and melena. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan revealed an intussusception. During exploratory laparotomy, an ileo-ileal intussusception with a 3 cm polypoid lesion 10 cm from the ileo-caecal junction was found.

microRNA 146a ameliorates retinal damage in experimental autoimmune uveitis.

Introduction: Uveitis and related intraocular inflammations are a major cause of blindness due to retinal damage caused by degeneration and loss of the photoreceptor cells. In mouse experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) previously we have shown mitochondrial oxidative stress with marked upregulation of αA crystallin in the inner segments of the photoreceptors. Furthermore, αA crystallin treatment prevented photoreceptor mitochondrial oxidative stress by suppressing innate and adaptive immunity in EAU.

Vitreoretinal surgery in the management of infectious and non-infectious uveitis - a narrative review.

Purpose: This study aims to conduct a narrative review about the current role of vitreoretinal surgery in the management of infectious and non-infectious uveitis.

Methods: This review was performed based on a search of the PubMed database or on relevant published papers according to our current knowledge.

Results: A total of 91 articles were identified in the literature review.

Enantioselective nickel-catalyzed dicarbofunctionalization of 3,3,3-trifluoropropene.

Despite paramount applications of chiral trifluoromethylated compounds in medicinal chemistry and materials science, limited strategies have been developed for catalytic asymmetric synthesis of such valuable fluorinated structures. Here, we report a nickel catalyzed enantioselective dicarbofunctionalization of inexpensive industrial chemical 3,3,3-trifluoropropene (TFP) with readily available tertiary alkyl and aryl iodides. The reaction overcomes the β-F elimination side reaction of TFP, and proceeds efficiently under mild reaction conditions.

Progress in the diagnosis of ocular sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous inflammation that affects multiple organ systems. The spectrum of extraocular and ocular involvement is wide and may precede systemic involvement. The diagnosis of ocular sarcoidosis relies on a combination of clinical findings, laboratory investigations, and radiographic findings.

Two Cases of () Endophthalmitis Manifesting With Unusual Epiretinal Deposits.

This article describes two cases of delayed-onset () endophthalmitis 1 month after cataract surgery manifesting with unusual epiretinal deposits. Both patients were referred for persistent inflammation after cataract surgery. After failing to respond to a vitreous tap with injection of antibiotics, the patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy and in one of the cases partial posterior capsulectomy for a posterior capsular plaque.

Influence of surfactant on CO adsorption of amine-functionalized MCM-41.

Concerning the increasing greenhouse effect, the development of efficient CO adsorbents is very important. In this study, the influence of surfactant on the adsorption performance of amine-functionalized MCM-41 was analysed. The results showed that the residual amount of surfactant in MCM-41 was gradually decreased with the increase of calcination temperature which improved the pore structure.

National Registry of Interstitial Lung Disease from Pakistan.

Introduction Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a heterogeneous group of over 200 parenchymal lung diseases with a myriad of etiologies. Interstitial lung disease registries from around the world show varying prevalence and incidence of these diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the epidemiology and characteristics of ILD in Pakistan.

Electroretinogram and Visual Field Correlation in Birdshot Chorioretinopathy.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess possible correlation between the visual field and electroretinogram (ERG) parameters in birdshot chorioretinopathy (BCR).

Design: Retrospective cross-sectional study.

Methods: This single-center study included 21 eyes of 11 patients with BCR with prior ERG and Goldmann kinetic perimetry.

Pathogenesis of ocular tuberculosis: New observations and future directions.

Ocular tuberculosis (OTB) encompasses all forms of intra- and extra-ocular inflammation associated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection. However, the organism is rarely found in ocular fluid samples of diseased eyes, rendering the pathomechanisms of the disease unclear. This confounds clinical decision-making in diagnosis and treatment of OTB.

Recommendations for the management of ocular sarcoidosis from the International Workshop on Ocular Sarcoidosis.

Aims: To establish expert recommendations for the management of ocular sarcoidosis (OS).

Methods: A question-based survey on the management of OS was circulated to international uveitis experts (members of the International Uveitis Study Group and the International Ocular Inflammation Society) electronically. Subsequently, a consensus workshop was conducted at the 7th International Workshop on Ocular Sarcoidosis (IWOS) in June 2019 in Sapporo, Japan as part of the Global Ocular Inflammation Workshops.

Ocular erythema nodosum leprosum: An immunohistochemical study.

Episcleritis, scleritis, and anterior uveitis are common clinical manifestations of ocular leprosy. Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) is an acute, exaggerated systemic immunological reaction that complicates the course of this chronic indolent disease. We present an ocular immunohistochemical study of severe form of ENL involving even the ciliary body and choroid resulting in the perforation of the globe on the initiation of anti leprosy therapy.

Multimodal imaging reveals pathological edges of disease activity in tuberculosis-associated multifocal serpiginoid chorioiditis.

Tuberculosis associated serpiginous-like choroidopathy can lead to significant vision loss. The anatomical cause for this visual decline can be elucidated using multimodal retinal imaging. Imaging modalities used in this case, most notably, optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), demonstrated specific atrophy of the choriocapillaris.

ENDOGENOUS ASPERGILLUS ENDOPHTHALMITIS IN AN IMMUNOCOMPETENT PATIENT WITH A REMOTE HISTORY OF PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS.

Purpose: To report a case of Aspergillus fumigatus endogenous endophthalmitis in an immunocompetent patient initially diagnosed as acute retinal necrosis.

Methods: Case report.

Patient: A 67-year-old woman with a remote history of treated pulmonary tuberculosis and no ocular history presented to an outside retina specialist with a sudden onset of floaters and blurred vision in one eye.

Relationship of Epiretinal Membrane Formation and Macular Edema Development in a Large Cohort of Uveitic Eyes.

: To identify the temporal relationship and clinical characteristics of epiretinal membrane (ERM) and macular edema (ME) formation in uveitic eyes.: A total of 269 subjects (444 uveitic eyes) met study inclusion criteria. Comprehensive ophthalmic examination, spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and clinical testing were carried out.

Evaluation of Retinal Pigment Epithelium Layer Change in Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Disease With Multicontrast Optical Coherence Tomography.

Purpose: Clinical evaluation of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) change is important for the therapeutic management of chronic Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease. We evaluated long-term change in the RPE layer in VKH disease, using near-infrared (NIR; 817 nm) images and autofluorescence images at 488 nm (short-wavelength [SW]-AF) and 785 nm (NIR-AF), and compared those images with images from multicontrast optical coherence tomography (MC-OCT). MC-OCT is capable of simultaneous measurement of OCT angiography, polarization-sensitive OCT, and standard OCT.
