For the first time, single-entity electrochemistry (SEE) was demonstrated in a hydrogel matrix. SEE involves the investigation of the electrochemical characteristics of individual nanoparticles (NPs) by observing the signal generated when a single NP, suspended in an aqueous solution, collides with an electrode and triggers catalytic reactions. Challenges associated with SEE in electrolyte-containing solutions such as signal variation due to NP aggregation and noise fluctuation caused by convection phenomena can be addressed by employing a hydrogel matrix.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied two medications, dapagliflozin and empagliflozin, to see how they affect heart health in people with type 2 diabetes in South Korea.
  • They looked at data from lots of patients and found that both medicines had similar overall heart health benefits, but patients taking dapagliflozin had a lower risk of heart failure and cardiovascular death.
  • The study helps understand how these medications work in different groups of people, especially since some groups, like Asian females, were not represented enough in earlier studies.

A nickel-catalyzed direct cross-coupling of unactivated aryl fluorides with aryl bromides is realized. The one-pot reaction, which avoids the use of preformed and sensitive organometallic reagents, proceeds effectively via C-F bond cleavage at room temperature in THF in the presence of the phosphine ligand and magnesium powder (with or without TMSCl) to produce the desired biaryls in modest to good yields.

We aimed to analyse the clinical characteristics of children with different types of anomalous aortic origin of the coronary artery (AAOCA) at different ages, and to discuss the factors related to myocardial ischaemia. In this retrospective study, we included 69 children diagnosed with AAOCA using CT coronary angiography; we classified the participants based on the type of AAOCA, age, and high-risk anatomy. The clinical characteristics of the different AAOCA types and age groups were compared, and the correlation between manifestations and high-risk anatomy was analysed.

Although extant research suggests that power without status, but not status without power, induces interpersonal conflict, we are yet to fully understand the asymmetric effects of holding power or status on psychological processes and group functioning. The present research attempts to fill this gap by arguing that holding power would heighten the motivation for status, whereas holding status may not necessarily have an equivalent effect on the motivation for power. We further proposed that power-status misalignment within a group would lead powerholders to be competitive toward statusholders due to heightened status motive and (upon failure to attain status) invest less in their group due to greater emotional distress.

Bulk evaporation of brine is a sustainable method to obtain minerals with the inherent advantage of selective crystallization based on ion solubility differences, but it has a critical drawback of requiring a prolonged time period. In contrast, solar crystallizers based on interfacial evaporation can reduce the processing time, but their ion-selectivity may be limited due to insufficient re-dissolution and crystallization processes. This study presents the first-ever development of an ion-selective solar crystallizer featuring an asymmetrically corrugated structure (A-SC).

Background/aims: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), as measured by maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), is an important independent predictive factor of cardiovascular outcomes in patients with heart failure (HF). However, it is unclear whether conventional equations for estimating CRF are applicable to patients with HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

Methods: This study included 521 patients with HFpEF (EF ≥ 50%) whose CRF was directly measured by cardiopulmonary exercise test using a treadmill.

Article Synopsis
  • A new method was developed to create polyhydroxy-β-butyrate (PHB) from a gas containing methane (CH) and carbon monoxide (CO) using a collaborative process involving methanotrophs and oxygenic photogranules (OPGs) without external oxygen.
  • The study identified the importance of oxygen in this process and selected specific strains (sp. DH-1 and OB3b) for testing under different carbon conditions, finding that OB3b with OPGs was more effective for methane conversion and PHB production.
  • Limited nitrogen levels led to increased PHB accumulation, achieving a yield of 83.0 mg/L from simulated biogas while reducing the growth of the whole microbial community

Waning vaccine-induced immunity, coupled with the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants, has inspired the widespread implementation of COVID-19 booster vaccinations. Here, we evaluated the potential of the GX-19N DNA vaccine as a heterologous booster to enhance the protective immune response to SARS-CoV-2 in mice primed with either an inactivated virus particle (VP) or an mRNA vaccine. We found that in the VP-primed condition, GX-19N enhanced the response of both vaccine-specific antibodies and cross-reactive T Cells to the SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern (VOC), compared to the homologous VP vaccine prime-boost.

Unlabelled: Pathogenic protein-truncating variants of RAD51C, which plays an integral role in promoting DNA damage repair, increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. A large number of RAD51C missense variants of uncertain significance (VUS) have been identified, but the effects of the majority of these variants on RAD51C function and cancer predisposition have not been established. Here, analysis of 173 missense variants by a homology-directed repair (HDR) assay in reconstituted RAD51C-/- cells identified 30 nonfunctional (deleterious) variants, including 18 in a hotspot within the ATP-binding region.
