Avoiding epidural adhesion following spinal surgery can reduce clinical discomfort and complications. As the severity of epidural adhesion is positively correlated with the inflammatory response, implanting a fibrous membrane after spinal surgery, which can act as a physical barrier to prevent adhesion formation while simultaneously modulates postoperative inflammation, is a promising approach to meet clinical needs. Toward this end, we fabricated an electrospun core-shell fibrous membrane (CSFM) based on polylactic acid (PLA) and infused the fiber core region with the potent natural anti-inflammatory compound docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

This study aims to explore the qualitative experiences of stroke survivors and caregivers participating in a work skills training programme. The research objectives are to understand participants' (i) perceived benefits of the programme, (ii) perceived challenges and drawbacks of the programme, and (iii) suggestions for improvement and future recommendations.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLycodine alkaloids are important natural products with diverse biological effects. In this manuscript, we set out the first structural optimization of the 2-pyridone moiety of Lycodine alkaloid via selective O-arylation under metal-free conditions and obtained a series of potent bioactive molecules against monosodium urate (MSU)-induced IL-1β production. Further investigations demonstrated that these natural product derivatives could activate the neuro-immunomodulatory cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP) to block the initial phase of NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

The brain atlas, which provides information about the distribution of genes, proteins, neurons, or anatomical regions, plays a crucial role in contemporary neuroscience research. To analyze the spatial distribution of those substances based on images from different brain samples, we often need to warp and register individual brain images to a standard brain template. However, the process of warping and registration may lead to spatial errors, thereby severely reducing the accuracy of the analysis.

Vascular cognitive impairment (CI) is commonly found in patients who had a stroke and with HF, ranging from mild CI to dementia. Early detection of CI is crucial for effective management and rehabilitation.

The pixel-based images of the potential distribution are successfully modeled from the developed U-Net CNN with an error of less than 1% error relative to a TCAD simulated reference of a 500-V electrostatic potential distribution in the AlGaN/GaN interface. Furthermore, the modeling time of potential distributions by U-Net takes about 80 ms.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a major life-threatening disease accounting for 85% of all lung cancer cases, has been treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), but often resulted in drug resistance, and approximately 60% of TKI-resistant cases are due to acquired secondary (epithelial growth factor receptor) EGFR-T790M mutation. To identify alternative targets for TKI-resistant NSCLC with EGFR-T790M mutation, we found that the three globo-series glycosphingolipids are increasingly expressed on this type of NSCLC cell lines, and among them, the increase of stage-specific embryonic antigen-4 (SSEA-4) expression is the most significant. Compared to TKI-sensitive cell lines, SSEA-4 and the key enzyme β3GalT5 responsible for the synthesis of SSEA3 are more expressed in TKI-resistant NSCLC cell lines with EGFR-T790M mutation, and the expression levels strongly correlate with poor survival in patients with EGFR mutation.

Molecules that have potent topoisomerase inhibitory activity but involve less DNA damage provide more desirable scaffolds for developing novel chemotherapeutic agents. In this work, we broke the rigid pentacyclic system of luotonin A and synthesized thirty-three compounds as potential Topo inhibitors based on the devised molecular motif.

We aimed to assess the AE risk in patients with different severities of COPD and AF receiving BBs compared with that in patients receiving calcium channel blockers (CCBs).
Methods: This retrospective cohort study used data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database from 2009 to 2018.
Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic fatal disease with limited therapeutic options. The infiltration of monocytes and fibroblasts into the injured lungs is implicated in IPF. Enolase-1 (ENO1) is a cytosolic glycolytic enzyme which could translocate onto the cell surface and act as a plasminogen receptor to facilitate cell migration via plasmin activation.

There is a lack of community-based cognitive interventions for stroke survivors. This pilot single trial aimed to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and perceived effectiveness of a community-based cognitive intervention program called Train-Your-Brain (TYB) for stroke survivors and caregivers.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on patients who underwent anatomic ACLR in our institution between 2015 and 2018. Patients who experienced rerupture after ACLR were identified and matched 1:1 with control patients who showed no evidence of graft failure during a minimum 48-month follow-up.
Introduction: Return-to-work is a key rehabilitation goal for many working aged stroke survivors, promoting an overall improvement of quality of life, social integration, and emotional wellbeing. Conversely, the failure to return-to-work contributes to a loss of identity, lowered self-esteem, social isolation, poorer quality of life and health outcomes. Return-to-work programmes have largely focused on physical and vocational rehabilitation, while neglecting to include mood and fatigue management.

Pseudo-natural products (PNPs) design strategy provides a great valuable entrance to effectively identify of novel bioactive scaffolds. In this report, novel pseudo-rutaecarpines were designed via the combination of several privileged structure units and 46 target compounds were synthesized. Most of them display moderate to potent inhibitory effect on LPS-induced NO production and low cytotoxicity in RAW264.

In an attempt to search for new natural product-based antitumor agents, a series of novel thiazolidinone derivatives of dehydroabietic acid-based B ring-fused-thiazole were designed and synthesized. The primary antitumor tests showed that compounds 5 m exhibited almost the best inhibitory activity against the tested cancer cells. The computational study suggested NOTCH1, IGF1R, TLR4, and KDR were the core targets of the title compounds, and the IC of SCC9 and Cal27 is strong correlation with the binding ability of TLR4 and compounds.
