Scaffolds of thiophene and benzothiophene are the important class of bioactive compounds found abundant in nature. The Diels-Alder reactions of 2-(1'-cycloalkenyl)thiophenes and 2-(1'-cycloalkenyl)benzo[]thiophenes having the alkene groups present in five-, six-, seven-, eight-, and twelve-membered rings with substituted -phenylmaleimides are characterized. The size of the cycloalkene rings plays a critical role in dictating the product distributions of expected and isomerized Diels-Alder adducts.

Reactions of BiI, I, and iodide salts of two different pyridinum cations result in the formation of the novel iodine-rich iodobismuthates(III) (1,3-MePy){[BiI](I)} () and (1-MePy){[BiI](I)) (), where the halometalate anions are connected by diiodine linkers into one- or two-dimensional supramolecular structures. Both complexes reveal narrow optical band gaps and fairly high thermal stability, favoring their potential use in photovoltaic devices.

Reinvestigation of (-benzoquinonedioximate)Ni/I systems demonstrated that the reaction itself and also the crystallization conditions dramatically affect the identity of generated species. Crystallization (CHCl, 20-25 °C) of the nickel(II) dioximate complex [Ni(bqoxH)] (bqoxH = -benzoquinonedioxime) with I in the 1:(1-10) molar ratios of the reactants led to several (-benzoquinonedioximate)Ni derivatives and/or iodine adducts [Ni(I)(bqoxH)(bqoxH)]·/I, [Ni(I)(bqoxH)(bqoxH)]·[Ni(bqoxH)], and [Ni(I)(bqox)(bqoxH)]·I; the latter one, featuring the anion-radical bqox ligand, is derived from the formal (-2H/1)-oxidation of bqoxH. In these three adducts, various types of noncovalent interactions were identified experimentally and their existence was supported theoretically.

The protonation of the carboxamide nitrogen atom is an essential part of in vivo and in vitro processes (cis-trans isomerization, amides hydrolysis etc). This phenomenon is well studied in geometrically strongly distorted amides, although there is little data concerning the protonation of undistorted amides. In the latter case, the participation of amide nitrogen in hydrogen bonding (which can be regarded as the incipient state of a proton transfer process) is less well-studied.

Self-assembly reactions between AgNO, L (PPh, PPhPy, AsPh, SbPh) and [β-MoO] in DMF led to the formation of [β-{AgL}MoO] anions, which were isolated as BuN salts (1-4) and characterized by XRD, IR and elemental analysis. In the crystal structures Ag can switch the coordination number from 5 (P, As) to 6 (Sb) by uptake of a DMF molecule. High-level QAIM analysis of the coordination sphere around Ag shows critical points even in the case of longer Ag-O distances.

Hexaiododiplatinates(ii) bearing ammonium and phosphonium cations, [R4N]2[Pt2(μ-I)2I4] {R = Et (1) and n-Bu (2)} and [R3PR1]2[Pt2(μ-I)2I4] {R = n-Bu and R1 = n-Bu (3); R = Ph and R1 = Ph (4); R = Ph and R1 = CH2Ph (5)}, were synthesized and characterized by high resolution ESI-MS, 1H, 13C{1H}, 31P{1H}, and 195Pt NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray powder diffraction, and also electrostatic surface potential calculations. Complexes 1-3 were cocrystallized with halogen bond (XB) donors based on organic iodides featuring electron withdrawing groups {REWGIs: 1,3,5-triiodotrifluorobenzene (1,3,5-FIB), iodopentafluorobenzene (IPFB), 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,4-FIB), and tetraiodoethylene (C2I4)} to give crystalline adducts 1·2(1,3,5-FIB), 1·2IPFB, 2·2(1,4-FIB), and 3·C2I4. Inspection of the XRD data of the obtained adducts revealed the presence, in all four structures, of intermolecular REWGII-Pt XBs between the iodine centers of REWGIs and the terminal iodide ligands of [Pt2(μ-I)2I4]2- anions, where the latter act as rectangular XB-accepting synthons forming XBs with two, three, and even four Pt-Iterminal ligands.

The current study provides a clear understanding of the chemical properties of annelated 3a,6a-diaza-1,4-diphosphapentalenes (DDPs), which are best viewed as stabilized singlet phosphinidenes. It was found that DDPs undergo reversible oligomerization in solution, which provides 1,2,3-diazaphosphole-substituted cyclotetraphosphines, isolated and characterized by X-ray crystal structure analysis. Transformation of the 10-π-electron heteropentalene system into a stabilized phosphinidene occurs when the P-N bond is lengthened, which is facilitated by weak Lewis acids and bases.

The dihalomethanes CH X (X=Cl, Br, I) were co-crystallized with the isocyanide complexes trans-[MX (CNC H -4-X ) ] (M=Pd, Pt; X =Br, I; X =F, Cl, Br) to give an extended series comprising 15 X-ray structures of isostructural adducts featuring 1D metal-involving hexagon-like arrays. In these structures, CH X behave as bent bifunctional XB/XB-donating building blocks, whereas trans-[MX (CNC H -4-X ) ] act as a linear XB/XB acceptors. Results of DFT calculations indicate that all XCH -X⋅⋅⋅X -M contacts are typical noncovalent interactions with estimated strengths in the range of 1.

Nonionic hydrotropes (low-molecular-weight amphiphiles) demonstrate striking dual actions in bulk solutions and interfaces, exhibiting both surfactant-like and co-solvent properties. We report on peculiar, strongly affected by this duality, liquid-liquid and air-liquid-liquid interfacial behavior in aqueous ternary systems, containing hydrotropes and hydrocarbons, in a broad range of compositions and at various temperatures. Phase diagrams of the studied systems, containing tertiary butanol (TBA), as a hydrotrope, are of Type 1: the hydrotrope, at the experimental conditions, is completely miscible with water and with all investigated hydrocarbons [cyclohexane (CHX), toluene (TOL), and -decane (DEC)], whereas the ternary mixtures exhibit liquid-liquid phase separation terminated at corresponding critical points.

In open environments such as water, enterohemorrhagic O157:H7 responds to inorganic phosphate (P) starvation by inducing the Pho regulon controlled by PhoB. This activates the phosphate-specific transport (Pst) system that contains a high-affinity P transporter. In the Δ mutant, PhoB is constitutively activated and regulates the expression of genes in the Pho regulon.

The isocyanide trans-[PdBr (CNC H -4-X') ] (X'=Br, I) and nitrile trans-[PtX (NCC H -4-X') ] (X/X'=Cl/Cl, Cl/Br, Br/Cl, Br/Br) complexes exhibit similar structural motif in the solid state, which is determined by hitherto unreported four-center nodes formed by cyclic halogen bonding. Each node is built up by four Type II C-X'⋅⋅⋅X-M halogen-bonding contacts and include one Type I M-X⋅⋅⋅X-M interaction, thus giving the rhombic-like structure. These nodes serve as supramolecular synthons to form 2D layers or double chains of molecules linked by a halogen bond.
