Positive Antiganglioside Antibodies in a Patient with Primary Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma of the Central Nervous System.

Up to one-third of lymphoma cases involve the nervous system. Miller-Fisher syndrome (MFS) associated with lymphoma is extremely rare. We herein report a case of primary central nervous system lymphoma initially mimicking MFS in a 70-year-old man who presented with subacute unsteady gait and diplopia.

A Reference Interval for CT-Based Liver Volume in Dogs without Hepatic Disease.

In both human and veterinary medicine, computed tomography (CT) volumetry provides a quantitative and accurate measure of liver volume. While CT volumetry is recognized as a useful method for assessing liver volume in dogs, a statistically significant reference interval for liver volume in dogs with no history of hepatic disease has not been reported. The purpose of the present study was to define a reference interval for liver volume with no history of hepatic disease using CT volumetry.

Improved Nursing Workload by Introducing a Traceability System to Manage Medical Materials.

This paper reports a case study in which an improvement in nursing work was achieved through the introduction of a traceability system compatible with radio-frequency identification (RFID) and bar codes for the management of medical materials. In verifying the RFID-based system in an operating room, the work time was reduced to approximately one-tenth of that of barcode reading. In the catheterization laboratory, a system consisting of a cartel management system utilizing bar codes and an RFID-compatible inventory management cabinet was introduced.

Learning Curve Effect of Combined Technique Thrombectomy as First-Line Attempt for Acute Ischemic Stroke: A Single-Center Retrospective Study.

Objectives: We retrospectively examined the initial experience and learning curve after the introduction of thrombectomy with the combined technique using an aspiration catheter and a stent retriever as first-line attempt for acute ischemic stroke.

Methods: Consecutive patients undergoing thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke at our institution between January 2020 and December 2022 were divided into 3 groups according to the year of thrombectomy. Patient characteristics and procedural, safety, and clinical outcomes were compared between the three year periods to determine predictors of favorable clinical outcome.

Severe fibromyalgia alleviated by the unique muscle relaxation method of applying low force: A case report.

Rationale: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by idiopathic persistent chronic pain in the ligaments or musculoskeletal system, and more than half of the patients with FM might have migraine headaches. Direct musculoskeletal intervention could be a non-pharmacological management to relieve symptoms. However, patients with severe FM often have intense pain from only a soft touch, thereby rendering musculoskeletal intervention challenging.

However, without additional intervention, regenerated axons remain largely unmyelinated (<10%), limiting functional repair.

Objective: The aim of this study is to consider factors related to poor adherence to daily treatment among caregivers of pGHD patients in Japan.

Bidirectional Patellar Luxation in Small- or Miniature-Breed Dogs in Japan; Patient Characteristics and Radiographic Measures Compared with Medial Patellar Luxation.

Bidirectional patellar luxation (BPL) is a relatively rare form of patellar luxation, with limited information reported regarding breed predisposition and etiology. The purpose of this study was to describe the patient characteristics and radiographic measures of proximodistal patellar position associated with BPL in dogs in Japan, compared with dogs with medial patellar luxation (MPL). A retrospective medical record search of surgically corrected MPL and BPL dogs was performed, and breed, age, sex, body weight, and presence of the patella alta in the extended-stifle position were recorded.

Anterior condylar arteriovenous fistula mainly fed by peripheral branches of the bilateral internal maxillary arteries: illustrative case.

Background: The main feeding artery of an anterior condylar arteriovenous fistula (AC-AVF) is the ascending pharyngeal artery and rarely the internal maxillary artery.

Observations: A 58-year-old male with a history of sinusitis since adolescence presented with a 5-year history of bilateral pulsatile tinnitus and a 2-month history of right ocular symptoms. Angiography showed that the peripheral branches of the bilateral internal maxillary arteries were the main feeding arteries of the AC-AVF and that they gathered in the clivus with a relatively large shunted pouch in the left jugular tubercle.

Computed tomographic measures of renomegaly vary among dogs with different types of congenital portosystemic shunts.

Renomegaly has been reported in dogs with congenital portosystemic shunts (PSS). However, no study has objectively evaluated the degree of renomegaly in dogs with different types of PSS. The purpose of this retrospective, analytical, cross-sectional study was to determine kidney size (renal length-to-L2 vertebral body ratio; RL/L2 ratio) using CT in dogs with different types of PSS and correlate with clinical information.

A 76-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital for the treatment of acute cerebral infarction in the right temporal stem, right lateral thalamus, and right pulvinar regions. Although his overall cognitive function was almost normal, he exhibited reduced visual sensitivity in the homonymous lower left quadrant of the visual field, left unilateral spatial neglect (USN), and simultanagnosia. Left USN improved 4 months after the onset of infarction; however, simultanagnosia persisted.

Rationale: Refeeding syndrome (RS) is a fatal condition caused by rapid calorie intake during starvation. Self-neglected fasting in psychiatric disorders is associated with RS. However, overeating resulting from circumventing the clinician's instructions does not have a reportedly high risk of RS.

8-Hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine and malondialdehyde in plasma and their association with disease severity in 20 cats with chronic kidney disease.

Objectives: Oxidative stress is associated with the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in humans. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of oxidative stress markers, 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and malondialdehyde (MDA), in the plasma and urine of cats with different stages of CKD.

Methods: Plasma and urine samples were collected from cats with CKD that were referred to the Veterinary Medical Center of the University of Tokyo between April 2019 and October 2022.

We recently discovered a (to our knowledge) new neuroimmune interaction named the gateway reflex, in which the activation of specific neural circuits establishes immune cell gateways at specific vessel sites in organs, leading to the development of tissue-specific autoimmune diseases, including a multiple sclerosis (MS) mouse model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). We have reported that peripheral-derived myeloid cells, which are CD11b+MHC class II+ and accumulate in the fifth lumbar (L5) cord during the onset of a transfer model of EAE (tEAE), play a role in the pain-mediated relapse via the pain-gateway reflex. In this study, we investigated how these cells survive during the remission phase to cause the relapse.

Possible effect of natural light on emotion recognition and the prefrontal cortex: A scoping review of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy.

Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, also known as functional NIR spectroscopy (fNIRS), is a tool for measuring the hemodynamic response of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) by using NIR light, enabling a noninvasive indirect neural activity assessment. The application of fNIRS in emotion recognition or the differential diagnosis of psychiatric disorders of depressive patients, including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, has previously been reported. Although the use of fNIRS has gradually expanded in cognitive neuroscience studies, few researchers have focused on the effects of light exposure in fNIRS studies.

Esophageal achalasia, diagnosed through the repeated manometry, alleviated using benzodiazepine: A case report.

Rationale: Idiopathic achalasia is an esophageal peristaltic dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The initial symptom is progressive dysphagia. However, due to its rarity, it is often misdiagnosed as an esophageal disorder.

Low-aberration ExB deflector optics for scanning electron microscopy.

To suppress aberrations in the signal electron optics of a scanning electron microscope, we propose ExB deflector (deflector with superimposed electric and magnetic fields) optics that cancel the aberrations generated during large-angle deflection. This improves the resolution of the angle or position of the signal electrons on the sample surface, allowing them to be discriminately detected. The proposed optics consist of two ExB deflectors and a transfer system with two 4-f systems, or systems that have four times the focal length, placed between them.

Effects of Enzamin, a Microbial Product, on Alterations of Intestinal Microbiota Induced by a High-Fat Diet.

In the human intestinal tract, there are more than 100 trillion microorganisms classified into at least 1000 different species. The intestinal microbiota contributes to the regulation of systemic physiologic functions and the maintenance of homeostasis of the host. It has been reported that the alteration of the intestinal microbiota is involved in metabolic syndromes, including type II diabetes and dyslipidemia, inflammatory bowel disease, allergic disease, and cancer growth.
