Complexity of best-evidenced practice in periodontal therapy: Views of Swedish Dental Hygienists.

Objectives: Dental hygienists (DHs) have an important role in the treatment of patients with periodontitis. The objective of the current qualitative interview study was to gain understanding about personal and organizational factors that influence best-evidenced DH practice in the treatment of periodontitis.

Methods: Data were obtained by interviewing Swedish DHs, who had been engaged in a preceding clinical field study on evidence-based periodontal therapy.

Synucleinopathies are neurodegenerative diseases that are associated with the misfolding and aggregation of α-synuclein, including Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies and multiple system atrophy. Clinically, it is challenging to differentiate Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy, especially at the early stages of disease. Aggregates of α-synuclein in distinct synucleinopathies have been proposed to represent different conformational strains of α-synuclein that can self-propagate and spread from cell to cell.

Synthesis and Characterization of Thiophene-based Donor-Acceptor-Donor Heptameric Ligands for Spectral Assignment of Polymorphic Amyloid-β Deposits.

Protein deposits are associated with many devastating diseases and fluorescent ligands able to visualize these pathological entities are essential. Here, we report the synthesis of thiophene-based donor-acceptor-donor heptameric ligands that can be utilized for spectral assignment of distinct amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregates, one of the pathological hallmarks in Alzheimer's disease. The ability of the ligands to selectively distinguish Aβ deposits was abolished when the chemical composition of the ligands was altered.

Prion protein glycans reduce intracerebral fibril formation and spongiosis in prion disease.

Posttranslational modifications (PTMs) are common among proteins that aggregate in neurodegenerative disease, yet how PTMs impact the aggregate conformation and disease progression remains unclear. By engineering knockin mice expressing prion protein (PrP) lacking 2 N-linked glycans (Prnp180Q/196Q), we provide evidence that glycans reduce spongiform degeneration and hinder plaque formation in prion disease. Prnp180Q/196Q mice challenged with 2 subfibrillar, non-plaque-forming prion strains instead developed plaques highly enriched in ADAM10-cleaved PrP and heparan sulfate (HS).

Identification of novel GPR81 agonist lead series for target biology evaluation.

GPR81 is a novel drug target that is implicated in the control of glucose and lipid metabolism. The lack of potent GPR81 modulators suitable for in vivo studies has limited the pharmacological characterization of this lactate sensing receptor. We performed a high throughput screen (HTS) and identified a GPR81 agonist chemical series containing a central acyl urea scaffold linker.

Monoamine oxidase A genotype and methylation moderate the association of maltreatment and aggressive behaviour.

Background: The association between childhood maltreatment and subsequent aggressive behaviour is modified by monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) functional polymorphism (MAOA-uVNTR) genotype, MAOA-Long (MAOA-L) in females, MAOA-Short (MAOA-S) in males. Childhood maltreatment is associated with differential DNA methylation in several genes. Consistent with recent proposals, we hypothesized that the association of the interaction of MAOA genotype and maltreatment with aggressive behaviour is further moderated by methylation of a region of interest (ROI) spanning the first exon and partial first intron of MAOA.

The Effects of Oil Extraction Methods on Recovery Yield and Emulsifying Properties of Proteins from Rapeseed Meal and Press Cake.

The agricultural sector is thought to be responsible for around 30% of the anthropogenic climate change and it is well established that high meat consumption has a tremendous impact on the environment. Rapeseed is mainly used for production of vegetable oil, but press cake has high protein content with the potential for incorporation into new plant protein-based foods. Protein was recovered from press cakes generated from different oil pressing processes.

The purpose was to improve the knowledge base for strength exercise therapy. The objective was to explore the relative differences in muscle strength in the main directions bilaterally across the hip, knee, and ankle joints between patients with light-to-moderate symptomatic and radiographic KOA and people without knee complaints.

We investigated the ability of luminescent conjugated oligothiophenes to stain the inclusions of Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy. They stained the Lewy pathology of Parkinson's disease and the glial cytoplasmic inclusions of multiple system atrophy.

The Forgotten Joint Score-12 in Swedish patients undergoing knee arthroplasty: a validation study with the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) as comparator.

In vivo detection of tau fibrils and amyloid β aggregates with luminescent conjugated oligothiophenes and multiphoton microscopy.

The detection of amyloid beta deposits and neurofibrillary tangles, both hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD), is key to understanding the mechanisms underlying these pathologies. Luminescent conjugated oligothiophenes (LCOs) enable fluorescence imaging of these protein aggregates. Using LCOs and multiphoton microscopy, individual tangles and amyloid beta deposits were labeled in vivo and imaged longitudinally in a mouse model of tauopathy and cerebral amyloidosis, respectively.

Psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), such as delusions and hallucinations, are risk markers for psychiatric symptoms and functional impairment. However, the unique contribution of PLEs to psychiatric symptoms remains unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of PLEs on psychiatric symptoms, adjusting for the baseline of such symptoms.

Association between time interval from neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy to surgery and complete histological tumor response in esophageal and gastroesophageal junction cancer: a national cohort study.

The optimal time interval from neoadjuvant therapy to surgery in the treatment of esophageal cancer is not known. The aim of this study was to investigate if a prolonged interval between completed neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and surgery was associated with improved histological response rates and survival in a population-based national register cohort. The population-based cohort study included patients treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and esophagectomy due to cancer in the esophagus or gastroesophageal junction.

Relative difference among 27 functional measures in patients with knee osteoarthritis: an exploratory cross-sectional case-control study.

Background: To raise the effectiveness of interventions, clinicians should evaluate important biopsychosocial aspects of the patient's situation. There is limited knowledge of which factors according to the International Classification of Function, Disability, and Health (ICF) are most deviant between patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and healthy individuals. To assist in measures' selection, we aimed to quantify the differences between patients with KOA and healthy controls on various measures across the ICF dimensions of body function, activity, and participation.

Results of postoperative microdialysis intraperitoneal and at the anastomosis in patients developing anastomotic leakage after rectal cancer surgery.

Anastomotic leakage postoperatively in patients operated with rectum resection and primary anastomosis is a common and feared complication. We have studied seven patients with an anastomotic leakage after and compared them with 13 patients without complications. Metabolic measurements with microdialysis were done during the first seven postoperative days, with measurements of glucose, pyruvate, lactate and glycerol.

Parental caregiver burden and recovery of adolescent anorexia nervosa after multi-family therapy.

This study investigated whether parental caregiving burden changed during adjunct multi-family therapy of adolescent anorexia nervosa and eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS) and whether caregiver burden at baseline and changes in caregiver burden during treatment were associated with treatment outcome.Twenty-four females, 13 to 16 years old, and their parents, participated in the study. Caregiver burden was measured with the Eating Disorders Symptom Impact Scale, by mothers (n = 23) and fathers (n = 22).

Homogenization of freshwater lakes: Recent compositional shifts in fish communities are explained by gamefish movement and not climate change.

Globally, lake fish communities are being subjected to a range of scale-dependent anthropogenic pressures, from climate change to eutrophication, and from overexploitation to species introductions. As a consequence, the composition of these communities is being reshuffled, in most cases leading to a surge in taxonomic similarity at the regional scale termed homogenization. The drivers of homogenization remain unclear, which may be a reflection of interactions between various environmental changes.

Self-Assembly of a Structurally Defined Chiro-Optical Peptide-Oligothiophene Hybrid Material.

Conducting polymers are routinely used in optoelectronic biomaterials, but large polymer polydispersity and poor aqueous compatibility complicate integration with biomolecular templates and development of discrete and defined supramolecular complexes. Herein, we report on a chiro-optical hybrid material generated by the self-assembly of an anionic peptide and a chemically defined cationic pentameric thiophene in aqueous environment. The peptide acts as a stereochemical template for the thiophene and adopts an α-helical conformation upon association, inducing optical activity in the thiophene π-π* transition region.

Repetitive Head Impacts in Youth Football: Description and Relationship to White Matter Structure.

Background: Few studies have examined white matter with diffusion tensor imaging in 8- to 12-year-old collision sport (CS) athletes.

Hypothesis: Youth CS athletes will demonstrate change in brain fractional anisotropy (FA) after a season of CS compared with an age-matched noncollision sport (NCS) cohort, and the number, magnitude, and location of hits will correlate with changes in the brain determined via FA for CS athletes.

Study Design: Prospective cohort study.

Pulmonary Vasodilation by Intravenous Infusion of Organic Mononitrites Of 1,2-Propanediol in Acute Pulmonary Hypertension Induced by Aortic Cross Clamping and Reperfusion: A Comparison With Nitroglycerin in Anesthetized Pigs.

Introduction: Suprarenal aortic cross clamping (SRACC) and reperfusion may cause acute pulmonary hypertension and multiple organ failure.

Hypothesis: The organic mononitrites of 1,2-propanediol (PDNO), an nitric oxide donor with a very short half-life, are a more efficient pulmonary vasodilator and attenuator of end-organ damage and inflammation without significant side effects compared with nitroglycerin and inorganic nitrite in a porcine SRACC model.

Methods: Anesthetized and instrumented domestic pigs were randomized to either of four IV infusions until the end of the experiment (n = 10 per group): saline (control), PDNO (45 nmol kg min), nitroglycerin (44 nmol kg min), or inorganic nitrite (a dose corresponding to PDNO).
