The Role of 70-MHz Ultrahigh-Frequency Ultrasound in the Peripheral Nerve Injury.

Aim: High-frequency ultrasound with an 18-MHz probe (18 MHz-HFUS) plays a relevant role in the evaluation of peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Ultrahigh-frequency ultrasound with a 70-MHz probe (70 MHz-UHFUS) offers higher spatial resolution and could allow a better detection of PNI. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of HFUS and UHFUS in PNI detection.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) can be associated with neurological deficits and has profound consequences for mortality and morbidity. Cerebral vasospasm (CVS) and delayed cerebral ischemia affect neurological outcomes in SAH patients, but their mechanisms are not fully understood, and effective treatments are limited. Here, we report that urotensin II receptor UT plays a pivotal role in both early events and delayed mechanisms following SAH in male mice.

Efficacy and Durability of Faricimab in Naïve Eyes with Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate functional and anatomical changes in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) treated with a loading dose of faricimab intravitreal injections (IVIs).

Methods: Eighteen eyes of 18 patients with active macular neovascularization and nAMD were enrolled at the Ophthalmology Clinic of University G. D'Annunzio, Chieti-Pescara, Italy.

Pyrazolone-Based Zn(II) Complexes Display Antitumor Effects in Mutant p53-Carrying Cancer Cells.

The synthesis and characterization of nine Schiff bases of pyrazolone ligands ( = 1-9) and the corresponding zinc(II) complexes - of composition [Zn(L)] ( = 1-9) are reported. The molecular structures of complexes , , , , and were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, highlighting in all cases a distorted tetrahedral geometry around the Zn(II) ion. Density functional theory studies are performed on both the ligands and the derived complexes.

Real-Time Monitoring of Cable Sag and Overhead Power Line Parameters Based on a Distributed Sensor Network and Implementation in a Web Server and IoT.

Based on the need for real-time sag monitoring of Overhead Power Lines (OPL) for electricity transmission, this article presents the implementation of a hardware and software system for online monitoring of OPL cables. The mathematical model based on differential equations and the methods of algorithmic calculation of OPL cable sag are presented. Considering that, based on the mathematical model presented, the calculation of cable sag can be done in different ways depending on the sensors used, and the presented application uses a variety of sensors.

Effect of Pro Re Nata Regimen with Anti-VEGF on Type 3 Macular Neovascularization: Long-Term Outcomes.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate long-term outcomes of intravitreal injections (IVI) of antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) with type 3 macular neovascularization (MNV).

Methods: This retrospective study included 19 eyes of 17 patients with nAMD and type 3 MNV treated with anti-VEGF IVI with a loading dose and a PRN regimen. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), presence of macular intraretinal fluid (IRF) and subretinal fluid (SRF), flow area (FA), subfoveal choroidal thickness (CT), and macular atrophy (MA) were assessed at baseline (T0) and during follow-up (T1, post-loading phase; T2, 1 year; T3, 2 years; T4 >2 years).

Long-Term Follow-Up of Brolucizumab in Macular Neovascularization.

Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate functional and anatomical changes in type 1 and type 2 naïve macular neovascularization (MNV) patients treated with brolucizumab injections up to 1 year of treatment (week 48).

Methods: Thirty-eight eyes of 38 patients with active MNV were enrolled at the Ophthalmology Clinic of the University "G. d'Annunzio," Chieti-Pescara, Italy.

Study on microstructure evolution in welded lap joint configuration of dissimilar advanced high-strength steels using low-frequency laser wobble welding.

Laser wobble welding (oscillating laser beam) experiments were performed on high-strength micro-alloyed steels (HSLA) in both a low-carbon state (top plate) and carburized state (lower plate) using various process parameters. The welds were characterized regarding microstructure and microhardness. The cross sections of the welds had a predominantly symmetric geometry and were free of defects.

Copper and Zinc Metal-Organic Frameworks with Bipyrazole Linkers Display Strong Antibacterial Activity against Both Gram+ and Gram- Bacterial Strains.

Here, we report a new synthetic protocol based on microwave-assisted synthesis (MAS) for the preparation of higher yields of zinc and copper in MOFs based on different bis(pyrazolyl)-tagged ligands ([M(BPZ)] where M = Zn(II), Cu(II), HBPZ = 4,4'-bipyrazole, [M(BPZ-NH)] where M = Zn(II), Cu(II); HBPZ-NH = 3-amino-4,4'-bipyrazole, and [M(MeBPZPh)] where M = Zn(II), x = 1; Cu(II), x = 2; HMeBPZPh = bis-4'-(3',5'-dimethyl)-pyrazolylbenzene) and, for the first time, a detailed study of their antibacterial activity, tested against Gram-negative () and Gram-positive () bacteria, as representative agents of infections. The results show that all MOFs exert a broad-spectrum activity and strong efficiency in bacterial growth inhibition, with a mechanism of action based on the surface contact of MOF particles with bacterial cells through the so-called "chelation effect" and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, without a significant release of Zn(II) and Cu(II) ions. In addition, morphological changes were elucidated by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and bacterial cell damage was further confirmed by a confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) test.

Average creatinine-urea clearance: revival of an old analytical technique?

Background: Creatinine-based equations such as the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) are recommended for estimating glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in clinical practice, but have reduced performance in advanced stages of chronic kidney disease. However, only rarely studies have evaluated the performance of eGFR by measuring the average of the urinary clearances of creatinine and urea (mCl) compared with the eGFR equations.

Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated the usefulness of mCl in a population of 855 participants who performed a GFR measurement by urinary inulin clearance.

Comparison between two minimally invasive techniques for Hirschsprung disease: transanal endorectal pull-through (TERPT) versus laparoscopic-TERPT.

Introduction: Surgical treatment for Hirschsprung disease (HD) has recently evolved into different minimally invasive techniques. The aim of the present study is to compare results from two different minimal invasive approaches, transanal endorectal pull-through (TERPT) and laparoscopic-assisted endorectal pull-through (LA-TERPT).

Multitarget-Directed Gallium(III) Tris(acyl-pyrazolonate) Complexes Induce Ferroptosis in Cancer Cells via Dysregulation of Cell Redox Homeostasis and Inhibition of the Mevalonate Pathway.

A series of Ga(Q) coordination compounds have been synthesized, where HQ is 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-RC(═O)-pyrazolo-5-one. The complexes have been characterized through analytical data, NMR and IR spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory (DFT) studies. Cytotoxic activity against a panel of human cancer cell lines was determined by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, with interesting results in terms of both cell line selectivity and toxicity values compared with cisplatin.

Choroidal and Retinal Imaging Biomarkers in Different Types of Macular Neovascularization.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) parameters in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and macular neovascularization (MNV) type 1, type 2, and type 3.

Methods: In this retrospective study, 105 treatment-naïve eyes of 105 patients (60 men and 45 women) with a definite diagnosis of active nAMD and MNV of different types and 105 frequency-matched age and gender healthy subjects were evaluated (61 men and 44 women). All subjects underwent a full ophthalmic examination and multimodal imaging assessment, including spectral domain (SD) OCT and OCTA.

Cognitive assessment in patients treated by immunotherapy: the prospective Cog-Immuno trial.

Background: The discovery of the importance of the immune system and its role in oncogenesis led to the development of immunotherapy, a treatment that represents a major advance in oncology management. Due to the recent nature of immunotherapy, little is known about its side effects and their impact on quality of life. To date, there is no published study that accurately assesses the impact of immunotherapy on cognition, mood and/or fatigue in patients treated for cancer, despite potential neurological toxicities.

Comparative Performance Analysis of the DC-AC Converter Control System Based on Linear Robust or Nonlinear PCH Controllers and Reinforcement Learning Agent.

Starting from the general topology and the main elements that connect a microgrid represented by a DC power source to the main grid, this article presents the performance of the control system of a DC-AC converter. The main elements of this topology are the voltage source inverter represented by a DC-AC converter and the network filters. The active Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) or Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor (MOSFET) elements of the DC-AC converter are controlled by robust linear or nonlinear Port Controlled Hamiltonian (PCH) controllers.

Brolucizumab Intravitreal Injection in Macular Neovascularization Type 1: VA, SD-OCT, and OCTA Parameter Changes during a 16-Week Follow-Up.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess early anatomical and functional changes after brolucizumab intravitreal injection (BIVI) in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and macular neovascularization type 1 (MNV1).

Methods: A total of 24 eyes of 24 patients suffering from naïve AMD with MNV1 candidates to BIVI as per label with q12/q8 dosing regimen after the loading dose were enrolled in this prospective study. Main outcome measures during a 16-week follow-up period included changes in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), subfoveal subretinal fluid (SSRF) thickness (SSRFT), subfoveal sub-retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) fluid thickness (SSRPEFT), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and pigment epithelial detachment (PED) maximum height (PED-MH).

Intravitreal Dexamethasone Implant (IDI) Alone and Combined with Navigated 577 nm Subthreshold Micropulse Laser (SML) for Diabetic Macular Oedema.

Background: The anatomical and functional changes after intravitreal dexamethasone implant (IDI) alone and combined with navigated subthreshold micropulse laser (NSML) in diabetic macular oedema (DMO) were compared.

Methods: Patients with a clinically confirmed diagnosis of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and DMO were enrolled in this prospective study and were randomly assigned to two different treatment groups: thirty patients were treated with IDI (IDI group), and the other 30 patients received IDI combined with NSML treatment (combined IDI/NSML group). All patients during a 6-month follow-up underwent best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) evaluation and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD OCT).

Zinc(II) Complex with Pyrazolone-Based Hydrazones is Strongly Effective against Which Causes African Sleeping Sickness.

Two pyrazolone-based hydrazones HL' [in general, HL'; in detail, = 5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-(2-phenyl-1-(2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)hydrazineyl)ethyl)-2,4-dihydro-3-pyrazol-3-one, = ()-5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-(2-phenyl-1-(2-(pyridin-2-yl)hydrazineyl)ethylidene)-2,4-dihydro-3-pyrazol-3-one] were reacted with Zn(II) and Cu(II) acceptors affording the complexes [Zn(HL)(MeOH)], [Cu(HL)], and [M(HL)] (M = Cu or Zn). X-ray and DFT studies showed the free proligands to exist in the N-H,N-H tautomeric form and that in [Zn(HL)(MeOH)], zinc is six-coordinated by the N,O-chelated (HL) ligand and other two oxygen atoms of coordinated methanol molecules, while [Cu(HL)] adopts a square planar geometry with the two (HL) ligands in anti-conformation. Finally, the [M(HL)] complexes are octahedral with the two (HL) ligands acting as κ-O,N,N-donors in planar conformation.

Choroidal modifications assessed by means of choroidal vascularity index after oral eplerenone treatment in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy.

Background: To investigate choroidal vascularity index (CVI) changes after oral eplerenone treatment in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (cCSC) using the Spectral-domain (SD)-Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) with enhanced depth imaging (EDI) mode.

Methods: Thirty-six eyes of 18 patients suffering from cCSC with monolateral foveal subretinal fluid (FSRF) successfully treated with oral eplerenone treatment and 18 age-matched healthy subjects were enroled in this retrospective study. EDI-OCT images obtained using Heidelberg Spectralis OCT device in patients with cCSC and FSRF (group 1); fellow eye (group 2) or healthy patients (healthy) were exported and then imported into image analysis ImageJ software for subsequent quantitative analysis.

Study of Nonperfusion Area Changes after Ranibizumab Intravitreal Injection for Diabetic Macular Edema by Means of Widefield OCT Angiography.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in retinal capillary nonperfusion areas (RCNPA) and the retinal capillary vessel density (RCVD) of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP) using widefield optical coherence tomography angiography (WFOCTA) in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) treated with intravitreal ranibizumab injection (IRI).

Materials And Methods: Twenty-four eyes of 24 patients with DR and DME candidates to a loading dose of IRI were enrolled. All patients underwent WFOCTA with the PLEX Elite 9000 device with 15 × 9 mm scans centered on the foveal center at baseline (T0) and 1 month after each intravitreal injection at 30 days (T1), 60 days (T2), and 90 days (T3).

Short-term comparison between navigated subthreshold microsecond pulse laser and oral eplerenone for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy.

To compare the anatomical/functional changes after navigated subthreshold pulse laser (SML) and oral eplerenone therapy for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (cCSC). A total of 36 eyes of 36 patients suffering from cCSC treated with navigated SML (Navilas® 577s; OD-OS GmbH, near Berlin, Germany) (18 eyes, SML group) and oral eplerenone (18 eyes, eplerenone group) were enrolled in this retrospective study. Main outcome measures during a 3-month follow up period included changes of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), foveal subretinal fluid thickness (FSRFT), and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT).

Real-time monitoring of Arundo donax response to saline stress through the application of in vivo sensing technology.

One of the main impacts of climate change on agriculture production is the dramatic increase of saline (Na) content in substrate, that will impair crop performance and productivity. Here we demonstrate how the application of smart technologies such as an in vivo sensor, termed bioristor, allows to continuously monitor in real-time the dynamic changes of ion concentration in the sap of Arundo donax L. (common name giant reed or giant cane), when exposed to a progressive salinity stress.

The Prostate Cancer Therapy Enzalutamide Compared with Abiraterone Acetate/Prednisone Impacts Motivation for Exploration, Spatial Learning and Alters Dopaminergic Transmission in Aged Castrated Mice.

Cognitive side effects after cancer treatment threatening quality of life (QoL) constitute a major challenge in oncology. Abiraterone acetate plus prednisone (AAP) and enzalutamide (ENZ) are examples of next-generation therapy (NGT) administered to metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) patients. NGT significantly improved mCRPC overall survival but neurological side effects such as fatigue and cognitive impairment were reported.
