Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) algorithm for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in seriously ill human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients lacks a firm evidence base. We aimed to develop a clinical prediction rule for the diagnosis of tuberculosis and to determine the diagnostic utility of the Xpert MTB/RIF assay in seriously ill HIV-infected patients.
Methods: We conducted a prospective study among HIV-infected inpatients with any cough duration and WHO-defined danger signs.
Objective: Although postmenopausal (post-M) women have behavioral and biological risk factors for HIV infection, the activity of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) agents in older adults has not been well studied.
Design: We used an ex-vivo approach to compare the tissue concentrations of tenofovir (TFV) diphosphate (TFVdp) and emtricitabine (FTC) triphosphate (FTCtp) in cervical tissues from premenopausal (pre-M) and post-M women.
Method: Cervical explants from 16 pre-M and 11 post-M women were incubated in 10-300 μg/ml TFV or FTC for 24 h.

Background: We previously reported that one-third of HIV-positive adults requiring medical admission to a South African district hospital had laboratory-confirmed tuberculosis (TB) and that almost two-thirds of cases could be rapidly diagnosed using Xpert MTB/RIF-testing of concentrated urine samples obtained on the first day of admission. Implementation of urine-based, routine, point-of-care TB screening is an attractive intervention that might be facilitated by use of a simple, low-cost diagnostic tool, such as the Determine TB-LAM lateral-flow rapid test for HIV-associated TB.

The utility of a line probe assay (Genotype MTBDR) performed directly on 2-month sputa to monitor tuberculosis treatment response is unknown.
