SUPPRESSOR OF MAX2 1 (SMAX1) and SMAX1-LIKE (SMXL) proteins comprise a family of plant growth regulators that includes downstream targets of the karrikin (KAR)/KAI2 ligand (KL) and strigolactone (SL) signaling pathways. Following the perception of KAR/KL or SL signals by α/β hydrolases, some types of SMXL proteins are polyubiquitinated by an E3 ubiquitin ligase complex containing the F-box protein MORE AXILLARY GROWTH2 (MAX2)/DWARF3 (D3), and proteolyzed. Because SMXL proteins interact with TOPLESS (TPL) and TPL-related (TPR) transcriptional corepressors, SMXL degradation initiates changes in gene expression.

Concurrent Micra Leadless Pacemaker Implantation and AVN Ablation: Computer Modeling of Novel Risk Mitigation Strategy.

Background: Concurrent Micra leadless pacemaker (Medtronic, Minneapolis, Minnesota) implantation and atrioventricular node (AVN) ablation has been shown to be feasible and safe in patients with symptomatic, drug-refractory atrial fibrillation (AF). However, major complications within the 30 days after concurrent Micra implantation and AVN ablation have been reported. Prevalence of complications and comorbidities associated with obesity: a health insurance claims analysis.

Background: Despite the substantial burden of obesity in the United States (US), data on the comprehensive range of comorbidities in different age groups is limited. This study assessed the prevalence of various comorbidities among people diagnosed with obesity (as per ICD-10 diagnosis code) across age cohorts and compared how they differ from people without obesity.

Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed individuals from all four regions (Midwest, Northeast, South, and West) of the US who had continuous insurance coverage from 2018 to 2020, using a large health insurance claims database (Merative™ MarketScan).

A network analysis of clinician-rated posttraumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder symptom clusters in a sample of veterans seeking outpatient treatment.

The presentation of comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) differs by substance type. The current study applied network analysis to explore the relationships between diagnostic symptom clusters by examining the strength and direction of unique associations between PTSD and SUD. Network analyses were estimated using a sample of 422 veterans diagnosed with co-occurring PTSD/SUD initiating psychotherapy for PTSD while receiving concurrent outpatient SUD treatment as part of a randomized clinical trial.

Large language models are becoming ubiquitous in the editing and generation of written content and are actively being explored for their use in medical education. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) engines to generate content in academic spaces is controversial and has been meet with swift responses and guidance from academic journals and publishers regarding the appropriate use or disclosure of use of AI engines in professional writing. To date, there is no guidance to applicants of graduate medical education programs in using AI engines to generate application content-primarily personal statements and letters of recommendation.

Evolution of interorganismal strigolactone biosynthesis in seed plants.

Strigolactones (SLs) are methylbutenolide molecules derived from β-carotene through an intermediate carlactonoic acid (CLA). Canonical SLs act as signals to microbes and plants, whereas noncanonical SLs are primarily plant hormones. Soil water sustains terrestrial life, yet its fate is uncertain under a changing climate. We conducted a deuterium labeling experiment to determine whether elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO), warming, and drought impact soil water storage and transport in a temperate grassland. Elevated CO created a wetter rootzone compared with ambient conditions, whereas warming decreased soil moisture.

Determining lead (Pb) concentrations in new paints using spectroscopic methods such as Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) requires technical expertise, consumables, equipment for method preparation, and instrumentation that can be cost prohibitive and difficult to maintain in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although portable X-ray Fluorescence (pXRF) analyzers are less expensive and simple to operate, their inaccuracy has limited their use to screening for the analysis of Pb in new, dried paint. To determine the limits of pXRF analyzers, new paint samples were purchased, dried, homogenized, and analyzed pXRF and ICP-OES.

Practices for controlling intracranial pressure (ICP) in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) vary considerably between centres. To help understand the rational basis for such variance in care, this study aims to identify the patient-level predictors of changes in ICP management.
