To estimate the accuracy of different radiologic criteria used to detect cervical lymph node metastasis in patients with head and neck carcinoma, seven different characteristics of 2,719 lymph nodes in 71 neck dissection specimens from 55 patients were assessed. Three lymph node diameters, their location, their number, the presence of a tumor, and the amount of necrosis and fatty metaplasia were recorded. The minimal diameter in the axial plane was found to be the most accurate size criterion for predicting lymph node metastasis.

Estrogen (ER), progesterone (PR), and androgen receptors (AR) were determined by saturation analysis in 100 cases of primary ovarian cancer and correlated with patient survival. The mean follow-up period was 5.4 years (range, 4 to 6.

We performed a randomized, controlled study on the dose-response effects of daily supplementation of 1.5, 3, and 6 g of the marine fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) as their ethyl esters for 12 wk in 45 healthy normotriglyceridemic male volunteers. Significant dose-related increases of the n-3 fatty acids 20:5, 22:5, and 22:6 in plasma phospholipids (p less than 0.

The clinical data and computed tomographic findings of 64 patients with solitary supratentorial brain lesions were presented to two panels of six experienced clinicians. The diagnoses predicted by these clinicians were compared with each other (interobserver variation) and with the definite diagnosis, which in almost all cases was based on histologic examination of the involved tissue (validity of predicted diagnosis). The interobserver agreement was only moderate.

We retrospectively studied relations between age, pre-existing chronic disease, sepsis, organ system failure, and mortality in 487 patients from a medical ICU. Single organ system failure (SOSF) occurred in 136 (28%) and multiple (greater than or equal to 2) organ system failure (MOSF) in 187 (38%) patients. Cardiovascular and pulmonary failure predominated.

We report a case of renal failure in a newborn infant due to membranous glomerulonephritis. The patient was anuric in the first 3 weeks of life, after which renal function recovered. The serum of the mother contained IgG antibodies which reacted with tubular brush borders and glomeruli of adult and fetal human kidneys.

We studied the therapeutic effects of continuously infused N-acetylcysteine, an O2 radical scavenger (N, n = 6), and terbutaline, a beta 2-agonist (T, n = 6), versus dextrose (controls C, N = 6) on hemodynamics and regional albumin extravasation in porcine septic shock. After instrumentation, injection of 99mTc-labeled red blood cells, and baseline measurements, pigs received a 90 min infusion of 11 +/- 9 X 10(8).kg-1 live Escherichia coli bacteria.

A longitudinal study of normal fetal growth is presented as a basis for prenatal diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias. The lengths of fetal limb bones, abdominal circumference, thoracic circumference, head circumference, foot length and orbital diameters were measured in 63 normal fetuses between 12 and 40 weeks of gestation. From these data, ratios were calculated which may have relevance for the prenatal diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias.

Bone marrow stromal cells are critical for the proliferation and differentiation of hemopoietic stem cells. The hemopoietic microenvironment is reproduced in long term bone marrow culture (LTBMC). Normal LTBMC versus leukemic LTBMC and their stroma conditioned medium were compared with respect to their proliferative and differentiation-inducing capacities.

A randomized double-blind study was conducted to compare the anti-emetic efficacy of 1 mg/kg vs 2 mg/kg metoclopramide, administered 5 times over a period of 8.5 h in 50 cancer patients treated with platinum-containing regimens (cisplatin, ethylenediamine platinum II malonate or spiroplatin). Twenty-six patients were treated with combination chemotherapy, mainly consisting of cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil.

Midazolam 15 mg orally, was compared with the combination of pentobarbital, promethazine, opial and scopolamine as premedication for ear surgery under local anaesthesia in the first of a series of three double blind clinical trials. Sedation, pain sensation and appreciation by patient and surgeon alike were in favour of the pentobarbital regime. Anxiolysis was the same for both regimes.

Tumor material from 91 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck was transplanted subcutaneously in athymic nude mice. In the first (man to mouse) passage, the calculated mean probability of tumor take in a single mouse was 11%. The probability of growth in the first passage was significantly better for moderately and poorly differentiated tumors than for well-differentiated tumors.

Hypertrophy of the inferior labial frenum, which is present in approximately 8% of the population, can give rise to prosthodontic or periodontal problems. In contrast to hypertrophy of the superior labial frenum, there is no relation to orthodontic problems. The indications for extirpation of a hypertrophic inferior labial frenum are discussed.

To evaluate cold and warmth cutaneous sensation separately, thermal discrimination thresholds (TDTs) for the foot were estimated for cold and warm stimuli in 71 normal subjects aged between 21 and 92 years. A "thermoaesthesiometer" operating on the Peltier principle was used. A rise of TDTs with age was found.

A clinicopathological study of 51 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma in the head and neck region seen over a period of 20 years is presented. The correlation between various histological features and their impact on the results is attempted. Longterm results with respect to loco-regional recurrences, distant metastases and survival with various modalities of therapy are presented.

A statistical analysis was made of data concerning diagnosis of IgE-mediated allergy in the upper respiratory tract in 292 patients. It appears that screening for an IgE-mediated allergy can be performed with a limited number of skin tests (rye grass, timothy, birch, house dust mite and cat). In this study a larger number of skin tests (15 instead of 5) and investigation of specific IgE (RAST) yielded little additional information (in 2% and 3% of the patients, respectively).

Prognostic factors for survival were analyzed retrospectively in 214 patients with brain metastases of the solid tumour type. The most frequent neurological signs and symptoms at diagnosis of cerebral involvement were headache-nausea-vomiting and focal weakness. Similar numbers of patients were found to have solitary metastasis and multiple lesions.
