Article Synopsis
  • Azacitidine (AZA) is a standard treatment for high-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and this study explored how skeletal muscle depletion (SMD) impacts MDS patients undergoing this treatment.* -
  • The study involved 50 MDS patients, evaluating muscle mass through CT imaging, revealing that 27 patients had SMD, with median survival slightly lower for those with SMD (13.4 months) compared to those without (15.2 months), though this difference wasn't statistically significant.* -
  • Results indicated that while SMD did not significantly affect overall survival or response rates, it was linked to a higher frequency of serious anemia and thrombocytopenia in patients treated with AZA

Article Synopsis
  • - Increased lactate levels from glycolysis are being studied as potential markers for metabolic changes in neurons, linked to a drop in brain pH, which has been associated with various neuropsychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and autism.
  • - Research shows that these pH and lactate changes are common across different animal models, including those for depression, epilepsy, and Alzheimer's disease, though findings vary, particularly within the autism spectrum.
  • - A large-scale analysis indicated that higher lactate levels correlate with worse working memory performance, suggesting that altered brain chemistry might reflect underlying conditions across multiple disorders.

Objectives: Inflammatory cytokines that signal through the Janus kinases-signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK-STAT) pathway, especially interferons (IFNs), are implicated in Sjögren's disease (SjD). Although inhibition of JAKs is effective in other autoimmune diseases, a systematic investigation of IFN-JAK-STAT signalling and the effect of JAK inhibitor (JAKi) therapy in SjD-affected human tissues has not been fully investigated.

Methods: Human minor salivary glands (MSGs) and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were investigated using bulk or single-cell (sc) RNA sequencing (RNAseq), immunofluorescence (IF) microscopy and flow cytometry.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare bone mineral density (BMD) changes around the femoral component after total hip arthroplasty (THA) in a fully hydroxyapatite-coated stem (CORAIL) and in a tapered-wedge stem (Taperloc complete) and identify predictors of BMD changes.

Methods: This retrospective study compared 43 hips in the CORAIL group and 40 hips in the Taperloc group. The relative changes in BMD at 2 years after THA measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and the three-dimensional quantified contact states of the stem with the femoral cortical bone were assessed.

We have previously reported that () is associated with the postoperative recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Based on this fact, we verified whether mRNA expression is also associated with HCC development from chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and liver cirrhosis (LC). There were 142 cases with CHC or LC who underwent liver biopsy.

Background: Periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA syndrome), and Kawasaki disease (KD) are both considered to be disorders of the innate immune system, and the potential role of inflammasome activation in the immunopathogenesis of both diseases has been previously described.

Case Presentation: Herein, we report the clinical courses of three patients who presented a rare combination of PFAPA syndrome and KD. Two patients who presented KD later developed the PFAPA syndrome, of whom one developed recurrent KD 2 years after the initial diagnosis.

Whether organ-specific regeneration is induced by organ-specific endothelial cells (ECs) remains unelucidated. The formation of white matter lesions due to chronic cerebral hypoperfusion causes cognitive decline, depression, motor dysfunction, and even acute ischemic stroke. Vascular ECs are an important target for treating chronic cerebral hypoperfusion.

Objective: Lysosome-associated membrane protein 3 (LAMP3) misexpression in salivary gland epithelial cells plays a causal role in the development of salivary gland dysfunction and autoimmunity associated with Sjögren's disease (SjD). This study aimed to clarify how epithelial LAMP3 misexpression is induced in SjD.

Methods: To explore upstream signaling pathways associated with LAMP3 expression, we conducted multiple RNA sequencing analyses of minor salivary glands from patients with SjD, submandibular glands from a mouse model of SjD, and salivary gland epithelial cell lines.
