Envenomation by 'dead' snakes: a review.

Trans R Soc Trop Med Hyg

January 2025

Venomous snakes are a potential hazard even after their death. Dead snakes or their severed heads can inflict bites under various bizarre circumstances and may result in envenomation. In this review, an effort has been made to discuss the circumstances under which envenomation from dead snakes can occur, the incidence and pathomechanics of such envenomation, clinical manifestations and management and preventive measures, as well as a review of the literature on this unique mode of snake envenomation.

Background: Despite the increasing integration of competency-based education in medicine, there remains a significant gap in effectively assessing educational outcomes, underscoring the urgent need for designed assessment blueprints that accurately reflect both curriculum content and competency standards in Community Medicine for undergraduate students. This study, conducted across the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) network, develops a summative assessment blueprint aimed at standardizing evaluations in medical education across diverse geographic locations in India.

Methods: Twenty-five experts from 10 All India Institutes of Medical Science were invited via email and contributed for summative assessment for a theory paper.

Background: Suture-loaded long hollow needles are used in arthroscopic surgery to pass or retrieve sutures and in meniscal repair surgeries. However, manual suture loading can be time-consuming and challenging, especially with finer sutures. We present a novel technique using vacuum suction to simplify and expedite suture loading in hollow needles and similar devices.

An investigation was carried out to evaluate the impact of pretreatments viz. wax coating, hot water dipping, and fungicide treatment on quality characteristics of kinnow. In the present study, a trial was conducted to extend the shelf life of kinnow fruits by maintaining the initial quality characteristics with three wax-to-water dilution ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:3), hot water dipping at 56 °C with varying time (40, 60, 80 s) along with fungicide treatment at various concentration (150, 200, 250 ppm).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of ABO compatibility on platelet transfusion outcomes in patients with spontaneous and traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (ICH).
  • It hypothesizes that ABO-identical transfusions would result in better post-transfusion platelet increments and improved neurologic outcomes compared to incompatible transfusions.
  • Results show no significant differences in platelet increments or clinical outcomes among patients receiving ABO-identical, major incompatible, or minor incompatible transfusions, suggesting ABO compatibility may not be as crucial as previously thought.

belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is locally known as Badichang or mahasindhu. In this study, we performed Soxhlet extraction to prepare methanolic and hydromethanolic extracts, followed by quantification of their total phenolic content and total flavonoid content. Qualitative analysis of both the extracts was conducted to determine the presence of different phytochemicals.

Background And Objectives: The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) are both frequently employed to gauge the symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD). Limited studies have attempted to compare these two scales. The purpose of our study was to compare the HDRS and MADRS scores of the study population as well as to calculate their bias and precision.

Background: To investigate if intraoperative very short-term variability in blood pressure measured by sample entropy improves discrimination of postoperative acute kidney injury after noncardiac surgery.

Methods: Adult surgical patients undergoing general, thoracic, urological, or gynecological surgery between August 2016 to June 2017 at Seoul National University Hospital were included. The primary outcome was acute kidney injury stage 1, defined by the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes guidelines.

Objective: Since February 2022, the number of casualties in the Russian-Ukrainian war have dramatically increased, with a high incidence of penetrating traumatic brain injuries (pTBIs). To date, there has been limited evaluation of pTBI of the anterior skull base involving the paranasal sinuses. The objective of this study was to highlight the authors' experience with this injury pattern and identify specific factors associated with favorable short-term (1-month) outcome and survival.

  • * 92 patients were divided into two groups (EA and DUNLuPS) to assess the adequacy of anaesthesia, time for administering the block, and the onset times for sensory and motor block.
  • * Results showed that both techniques had similar success rates, but DUNLuPS had a longer performance time, yet it allowed for quicker onset of sensory and motor blocks compared to EA.

The current study explores the effectiveness of drug particle deposition into human respiratory airways to cure various pulmonary-bound ailments. It has been assumed that drug solutions are inhaled in the form of tiny droplets or mist, which after striking create a thin layer along the inner surface of airways where the virus initially resides to infect the human body. A coupled Eulerian wall film (EWF) and discrete phase model (DPM) based simulation approach is used to capture these dynamics.

Background And Objectives: The coexistence of major depressive disorder (MDD) and metabolic illness could culminate in an aberrant metabolic profile. Individuals with MDD and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are more likely to have impaired metabolic indicators. Effective antidepressant therapy can alleviate depressive symptoms and metabolic abnormalities.

Background Cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is the most underdiagnosed consequence of diabetes because standard hospital settings do not provide consistent diagnostic criteria or testing resources. It is still unclear how diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and CAN are related. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of CAN in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus who had isolated DPN without other microvascular or macrovascular complications.

The global surge in glass waste generation, exceeding 130 million tons annually, presents a pressing environmental issue, compounded by inadequate recycling practices, it is concerning that the global recycling rate for glass waste is below 50%. This research investigates the utilization of WG as a FA substitute in paver block to mitigate the ecological footprint of conventional paver block while enhancing its mechanical properties. WG's unique characteristics, such as high silica content and impermeability, make it a promising alternative.

  • The Letter reports the most accurate measurement so far of the matter-antimatter imbalance during Pb-Pb collisions at a high energy level of 5.02 TeV.
  • It utilizes the Statistical Hadronization framework to determine precise values for the electric charge and baryon chemical potentials, μ_{Q} and μ_{B}.
  • The analysis of antiparticle-to-particle yield ratios shows that the collisions create a system that is generally baryon-free and electrically neutral at midrapidity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the relationship between high levels of inspired oxygen fraction during one-lung ventilation in thoracic surgery and the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs).
  • It analyzes data from over 2,700 surgeries across four US medical centers, finding that 5.2% of procedures resulted in PPCs, with some association between higher inspired oxygen and these complications.
  • Ultimately, the results suggest that limiting oxygen levels to prevent PPCs may not be necessary, as the duration of one-lung ventilation appears to be a more significant risk factor.

Background: Intraoperative events and clinical management of deceased organ donors after brain death are poorly characterized and may consequently vary between hospitals and organ procurement organization (OPO) regions. In a multicenter cohort, we sought to estimate the incidence of hypotension and anesthetic and nonanesthetic medication use during organ recovery procedures.

Methods: We used data from electronic anesthetic records generated during organ recovery procedures from brain-dead adults across a Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG) cohort of 14 US hospitals and 4 OPO regions (2014-2020).
