An incursion and outbreak of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) was reported in Australia in 2021 and 2022, respectively. There was speculation that JEV may have been circulating in Australia unknowingly prior to the detection. In this study, we determined sero-prevalence and transmission of West Nile virus (WNV), Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVEV) and JEV, prior to and post JEV incursion in a sentinel equine population in south-east Queensland (SEQ), Australia, using blocking ELISAs (screening test) and virus neutralisation test (confirmatory).

Article Synopsis
  • - Cell-free placental DNA (cfpDNA) is found in the blood of pregnant women and can be used to study the placenta without invasive procedures.
  • - CfpDNA has proven useful in noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT), but our understanding of its biology is still limited, which hampers further research and applications.
  • - This review aims to summarize what we know about cfpDNA, identify knowledge gaps, and suggest future research avenues to enhance its clinical utility.

Introduction: During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic, there was a surge in demand for mental health services worldwide, presenting challenges for healthcare institutions as they navigated changes in policy and safety regulations. In the United States, this resulted in many behavioral health modality changes to remain in compliance with the Center for Disease Control guidelines. A growing body of literature has documented these, yet few explored barriers and facilitators affecting the adoption of these modality delivery changes.

Celestial orientation and navigation are performed by many organisms in contexts as diverse as migration, nest finding and straight-line orientation. The vinegar fly, Drosophila melanogaster, performs menotaxis in response to celestial cues during tethered flight and can disperse more than 10 km under field conditions. However, we still do not understand how spectral components of celestial cues and pauses in flight impact heading direction in flies.

Article Synopsis
  • HARM is an indicator of blood-brain barrier damage linked to negative outcomes in patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke caused by blocked large blood vessels (AIS-LVO).
  • The study investigated whether poor venous outflow (VO) is associated with higher rates of HARM in patients after thrombectomy, finding that patients with bad VO experienced significantly more HARM.
  • Key findings showed that patients with poor VO had worse stroke severity scores, larger ischemic tissue damage, and a higher likelihood (31%) of developing HARM post-treatment compared to those with good VO (10%).
