Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the relationship between pro-BNP, troponin-I, ECG, and ECHO measurements in diagnosing cirrhotic cardiomyopathy in patients with liver cirrhosis.
  • Thirty compensated cirrhotic patients, thirty decompensated cirrhotic patients, and thirty controls were analyzed using ECHO, ECG, and blood tests for troponin-I and pro-BNP levels.
  • Results indicated that pro-BNP levels and QTc intervals were significantly elevated in both compensated and decompensated cirrhotic groups compared to controls, suggesting a correlation between higher pro-BNP levels and the severity of cirrhosis-related cardiomyopathy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the relationship between celiac disease (CD) and another unspecified condition by comparing how common it was in patients with CD versus those without.
  • Fifteen out of 31 patients with CD were male, with an average age of 33.1 years, while the control group had a higher average age of 44.4 years, and overall prevalence rates were similar between the two groups.
  • Although there was a lower prevalence of the unspecified condition in celiac patients compared to controls, the difference wasn't statistically significant, indicating no clear correlation, but the authors suggest more research is needed.

Introduction: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major health problem worldwide. The majority of cases involving HCV infection develop into chronic hepatitis because of a failure to develop an effective immune response. Apoptosis of the hepatocytes plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of HCV infection: the interaction between the Fas antigen on hepatocytes and the Fas ligand on T cells corresponds to the main mechanism for hepatocyte damage.

Objective: To determine the relationships between serum leptin and levels of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], apolipoprotein A-1 (ApoA-1) and apolipoprotein B (ApoB) in patients with cholelithiasis.

Methods: Patients with ultrasound-confirmed cholelithiasis and controls frequency-matched for age, sex, body mass index, fasting blood glucose and haemoglobin A1c levels were recruited. Fasting blood samples from all study participants were assayed for glucose, haemoglobin A1c, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglyceride.

Human serum paraoxonase contributes to the anti-atherogenic effect of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and has been shown to protect both low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and HDL-C against lipid peroxidation. We investigated the effects of rosiglitazone on paraoxonase activity and metabolic parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus [50 patients (30 males, 20 females); mean ± SD age: 58.7 ± 9.
