Drug abuse poisoning is a significant public health problem in many countries all over the world. The recent study aimed to assess the applicability of NEWS II and APACHE II scores as predictors of the ICU admission of acute intoxication by substance abuse. The study enrolled 98 patients admitted to the Alexandria Poison Center of the Main University Hospital (APC-AMUH) with a history of acute intoxication with substance abuse.

Study of natural radioactivity and the state of radioactive disequilibrium in U-series for rock samples, North Eastern Desert, Egypt.

Twenty rock samples collected from North Eastern Desert in Egypt have been investigated. Natural radionuclide contents have been measured by gamma-ray spectrometry employing a shielded HPGe detector. The activities of (238)U, (232)Th and (40)K have been determined in Bq/kg dry weight.

Natural radioactivity levels for selected kinds of Egyptian sand.

The monitoring and evaluation of natural radioactivity content of sixty-five different samples of sand used in building materials, black sand and its components, and therapy sand collected from different locations in Egypt have been investigated. The specific radioactivity concentration of 238U, 232Th series, and 40K were measured by gamma-ray spectrometer using a shielded HPGe. The obtained results of 238U and 232Th series as well as 40K are discussed.

The accumulation of certain elements in vitally important media such as water, soil, and food is undesirable from the medical point of view. It is clear that the fertilizers vary widely in their heavy metals and uranium content. A shielded high purity germanium HPGe detector has been used to measure the natural concentration of 238U, 232Th, and 40K activities in the phosphate fertilizer and its components collected from Abu-Zaabal fertilizers and chemical industries in Egypt.
