Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if stopping routine gastric residual volume (GRV) assessments would help preterm infants reach full feeding volumes faster.
  • A total of 80 infants were involved, with 39 assessed for GRV and 41 not assessed. The results indicated no significant difference in the time it took to achieve full feeding between both groups (12 days vs. 13 days).
  • The conclusion was that eliminating GRV assessments did not lead to quicker attainment of full enteral feeds for preterm infants in the NICU.

The diversity principle-the intuitive notion that diverse evidence is, all else equal, more persuasive, suggestive, confirmatory, or otherwise better than less varied sets of evidence-is a clear component of scientific practice and endorsed by scientists and philosophers alike. A great body of psychological research on people's understanding and application of the diversity principle exists, yet it remains divided into multiple, distinct research communities, which often come to conflicting conclusions. One reason for this is that the range of tasks and domains investigated is appropriately wide.

A wide variety of radioactive waste is generated by pharmaceutical research. One particularly high volume low specific activity waste stream produced by a research and development facility is aqueous 125I waste. This waste is generally held for decay and released to the sanitary sewer when the activity is low enough to ensure that concentrations are well below the appropriate regulatory limits.

A multidisciplinary group developed a Quality Improvement program for use of vecuronium in the MICU. In addition to providing JCAHO with a successful QI effort, they changed standards of care and policies for use of paralytic drugs, revised the complication rate and saved a significant amount of money through reduced length of stay and amount of drugs used. In addition, they realized the importance of QI in their practice and the importance of collaboration in conducting quality QI programs.
