Changes in national rates of psychiatric beds and incarceration in Central Eastern Europe and Central Asia from 1990-2019: A retrospective database analysis.

Background: Numbers of psychiatric beds (general, forensic, and residential) and prison populations have been considered to be indicators of institutionalisation of people with mental illnesses. The present study aimed to assess changes of those indicators across Central Eastern Europe and Central Asia (CEECA) over the last three decades to capture how care has developed during that historical period.

Methods: We retrospectively obtained data on numbers of psychiatric beds and prison populations from 30 countries in CEECA between 1990 and 2019.

Forensic psychiatry in some Balkan countries.

Purpose Of Review: In Balkan countries, as in all Europe, forensic psychiatry as a subspecialty between psychiatry and legal medicine, an interface between mental health and the law, is focused on assessment and treatment of people with mental disorder who show antisocial or violent behavior. Thus, the authors thought that to show the actual situation of forensic psychiatry in their countries would be more interesting than only to review some articles published in these last 2 years in this part of the world.

Recent Findings: The article also includes some review about forensic psychiatry in prison in Bulgaria, Serbia and Russia and about a recent book published in Bulgaria.

[The effect of preoperative preparation of the patient with rectal cancer on postoperative course].

Unlabelled: Preoperative preparation of patients with rectal cancer prior to surgery consisted of a constant concern for both the surgeon and the doctor of anesthesia and intensive care. The purpose of the study is to compare postoperative results in terms of evolution (postoperative morbidity, severity, days of hospitalization) in patients who have undergone surgery for rectal cancer, some with classical preparation, others, according to the ERAS protocol.

World psychiatric association section of old age psychiatry consensus statement on ethics and capacity in older people with mental disorders.

The World Psychiatric Association (WPA) Section of Old Age Psychiatry, since 1997, has developed Consensus Statements relevant to the practice of Old Age Psychiatry. Since 2006 the Section has worked to develop a Consensus Statement on Ethics and Capacity in older people with mental disorders, which was completed in Prague, September 2008, prior to the World Congress in Psychiatry. This Consensus meets one of the goals of the WPA Action Plan 2008-2011, "to promote the highest ethical standards in psychiatric practice and advocate the rights of persons with mental disorders in all regions of the world".

Limited impact of the summer heat wave in France (2003) on hospital admissions and relapses for multiple sclerosis.

Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) often report worsening of symptoms with increased environmental temperature. The aim of this paper was to determine whether or not the heat wave of the summer of 2003 in France was responsible for an increase in hospital admissions and relapses in MS patients. MS patients who were hospitalized between January 1,2000 and December 31,2003 were identified, and we established which patients were suffering relapses.
