Emerging antimicrobial resistance in early and late-onset neonatal sepsis.

Background: Compared to developed countries, the use of antimicrobials in Egypt is less regulated and is available over the counter without the need for prescriptions. The impact of such policy on antimicrobial resistance has not been studied. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of early and late onset sepsis, and the frequency of antimicrobial resistance in a major referral neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Role of Early Onset Neutropenia in Development of Candidemia in Premature Infants.

Background: The aim of the study was to assess the effect of early-onset neutropenia (EON) on the development of candidemia in premature infants and evaluate other risk factors.

Materials And Methods: This prospective study was carried out in a neonatal intensive care unit of Cairo University Hospital. Fifty neutropenic premature infants were matched to 50 non-neutropenics.

Lipid peroxides in the serum of asphyxiated neonates.

Objective: Lipid peroxides (LPOs) are released when free radicals react with unsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes during hypoxic ischemic insult in neonates. We aimed to assess LPO concentrations in the serum of asphyxiated and non-asphyxiated neonates and examine their correlation with the severity of asphyxia.

Study Design: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on a group of asphyxiated neonates and controls.

Jaundice, phototherapy and DNA damage in full-term neonates.

Objective: Phototherapy is the standard therapeutic approach for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Oxidative effects of phototherapy may have potential harms, including DNA damage. Unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) might also possess antigenotoxic potential.

Role of HFE gene mutations on developing iron overload in beta-thalassaemia carriers in Egypt.

A case-control study aimed to determine the prevalence of C282Y, H63D and S65C mutations of the HFE gene in beta-thalassaemia carriers and investigate their influence on iron absorption. A total of 41 beta-thalassaemia carriers and 40 control subjects without haemoglobinopathies were screened for the C282Y, H63D and S65C mutations by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment-length polymorphism. The iron status in these subjects was studied and correlated with the HFE gene mutations.
