New technologies for future of surgery in Ireland: An RCSI working Group report 2024.

Introduction: Surgery is a cognitive discipline whose practitioners characteristically use technology during operations for patients. With accelerating technological innovation throughout society and healthcare, we sought to develop a shared position for Irish surgery via a commissioned work programme by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Methods: Using Stanford design principles, representative clinical specialty and academic leads and higher trainee representatives across 15 specialties were surveyed regarding sentiments, perspectives and concerns regarding now and near future technology in clinical practice, career considerations and training/education.

Virulence Evolution via Pleiotropy in Vector-Borne Plant Pathogens.

The dynamics of virulence evolution in vector-borne plant pathogens can be complex. Here, we use individual-based, quantitative-genetic simulations to investigate how virulence evolution depends on genetic trade-offs and population structure. Although quite generic, the model is inspired by the ecology of the plant-pathogenic bacterium , and we use it to gain insights into possible modes of virulence evolution in that group.

Evaluation of Post-Operative Outcomes of Femoral Neck Fracture Interventions: A Systematic Review.

Introduction: Femoral neck fractures (FNF) represent a significant challenge in orthopedic practice, demanding prompt intervention to restore function and mobility in affected individuals. Numerous surgical interventions have been developed to address these fractures, including internal fixation with devices such as the Femoral Neck System (FNS, DePuy Synthes, Inc., West Chester, PA, USA).

Sorafenib or anthracycline-based chemotherapy for progressive desmoid tumors.

Background: Desmoid tumors can cause morbidity due to local invasion, potentially being fatal when fast growth compromises vital structures. In this context, a timely treatment response is required. This study aims to compare the activity of sorafenib and anthracycline-containing regimens during the first year of treatment.
