We reviewed 236 of the 388 Chiari pelvic osteotomies performed between 1953 and 1967 at the Orthopaedic University Clinic of Vienna for the treatment of congenital dislocation and subluxation of the hip. Over 90% of the operations were performed by Chiari himself. Twenty-one hips had needed reoperation after an average of 15.

MRI of proven spondylitis was performed in 39 patients. Acute spondylitis appeared hypointense on T1-weighted and hyperintense on T2-weighted images. Following intravenous application of Gd-DTPA, enhancement of the marrow and disk was seen.

In a study of 21 patients with osteogenic sarcoma of the apendicular skeleton proven by biopsy, the diagnostic value of computed tomography (CT) for the assessment of intramedullary tumor growth, epiphyseal and joint involvement was determined. CT findings were correlated with histopathologic findings. 10 of the 21 tumors were located far from the epiphysis, in 11 cases the epiphysis was infiltrated.

Pain and loss of function of the skeleton are the main symptoms of patients with bony metastases of renal cancer. Experience with 57 patients (40 of them had 52 operations) shows the surgical possibilities for early restoration of function and pain relief. Metastases were mainly localized in the femur, vertebral column, and humerus.

Chemotherapeutical treatment with high dose methotrexate (HD-MTX) of osteogenic sarcoma has been performed at the Orthopaedic University Clinic of Vienna since 1975. In accordance with the cooperative study for osteosarcoma (Coss) which has been in use in Germany and Austria since 1977, HD-MTX has been used in larger quantity beside other cytostatic drugs. The total of 4259 g MTX has been applied to 36 patients who were suffering from malignant bone tumors.
