Background:: clinical audits highlight areas where care may not be of the desired quality; they are essential to ensure care is safe and effective. Effective assessment and management of pain have been shown to improve patient wellbeing and clinical outcomes.

Aim:: this audit aimed to identify compliance with pain assessment tools and documentation within intensive care and make recommendations to improve practice.

Objective: To determine trends in the causes of death in a West African town. Mortality caused by infectious diseases is reported to be declining while degenerative and man-made mortality factors are increasingly significant. Most mortality analyses for sub-Saharan Africa have involved extrapolation and have not been derived from community-based data.

Hepatitis B vaccination in infancy in The Gambia: protection against carriage at 9 years of age.

To estimate the efficacy in The Gambia (West Africa) of infant hepatitis B vaccination against infection and carriage with the virus at the age of 9 years. The HBV status of 9-year old children vaccinated in infancy was compared to that of unvaccinated children of the same age. Eight percent of the vaccinated children had been infected by HBV compared to 50% of the unvaccinated control group; HBV carrier status was 0.

What level of hepatitis B antibody is protective?

This study assessed the level of vaccine-induced hepatitis B surface antibody that is protective against hepatitis B infection and carriage in The Gambia. Sera from 700 of a cohort of 1041 children vaccinated against hepatitis B in infancy were serially tested for markers of hepatitis B until age 7 years. No absolute level of protection against infection was found, but all children who attained a peak antibody response to vaccination of >=10 IU/L were protected against carriage of hepatitis B surface antigen.

The impact of charging for insecticide on the Gambian National Impregnated Bednet Programme.

During the second year of the Gambian National Impregnated Bednet Programme (NIBP) charges for insecticide ($0.50 per net) were introduced into the half of the primary health care villages in the country where insecticide have been provided free of charge the previous year. Free insecticide was provided in the remaining villages that had acted as controls during the previous year.
