Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) presents a significant risk of maternal morbidity and mortality, in large part due to the potential for massive hemorrhage at time of delivery. Recently, multiple gestations have been shown to be an independent risk factor for PAS, especially in the setting of other major risk factors. Importantly, antenatal detection of PAS in twin pregnancies has been shown to be suboptimal when compared to singleton pregnancies.

Article Synopsis
  • Ionizing radiation can lead to significant damage in materials, but understanding this process, especially in nanostructures, has been challenging due to methodological limitations.
  • This study utilized transient photoabsorption to examine the behavior of free electrons in bulk and nanostructured silica (aerogel) subjected to brief bursts of radiation from x rays and protons.
  • Results indicate a notable increase in the lifetime of free electrons in aerogels, linked to a disruption in typical recovery processes, providing insights into how small-scale interactions can lead to observable effects in larger systems.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the outcomes of patients who experience pre- and periviable preterm premature rupture of membranes (pPPROM) after fetoscopic laser surgery (FLS) for twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS).
  • It analyzed data from 171 FLS cases, finding that 18.8% of 96 included subjects experienced pPPROM, with significant differences in dual survivorship and perinatal outcomes compared to those without pPPROM.
  • Despite lower gestational age and survival rates for twins among those with pPPROM, the survival rate to live birth of at least one twin remained high for patients who chose expectant management.

Background: () eradication rates have fallen globally, likely in large part due to increasing antibiotic resistance to traditional therapy. In areas of high clarithromycin and metronidazole resistance such as ours, Maastricht VI guidelines suggest high dose amoxicillin dual therapy (HDADT) can be considered, subject to evidence for local efficacy. In this study we assess efficacy of HDADT therapy for eradication in an Irish cohort.

Objective: We aim to describe neonatal respiratory outcomes following previable preterm premature rupture of membranes(PPROM) when gentle ventilation is utilized. We also report maternal morbidity and mortality.

Study Design: This is a retrospective single-center cohort study of infants delivered between 2016 and 2020 that included infants born at ≥23 weeks without major congenital anomaly after a pregnancy complicated with PPROM before 23 weeks gestation.
