Unlabelled: Volcanic islands are often subject to flank instability, resulting from a combination of magmatic intrusions along rift zones and gravitational spreading causing extensional faulting at the surface. Here, we study the Koa'e fault system (KFS), located south of the summit caldera of Kīlauea volcano in Hawai'i, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, prone to active faulting, episodic dike intrusions, and flank instability. Two rift zones and the KFS are major structures controlling volcanic flank instability and magma propagation.

Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) are the most used pesticides worldwide. This widespread dissemination raises the question of non-target effects on a wide range of organisms, including soil micro-organisms. Despite a large body of scientific studies reporting the harmful effects of GBHs, the health and environmental safety of glyphosate and its commercial formulations remains controversial.

Purpose: Clinical outcomes have improved for women with early stage, HER2-positive breast cancer following the FDA approval of adjuvant trastuzumab use in 2006. However, only limited information exists on such patients' outcomes in real-world settings outside of clinical trials. We examined the risk of subsequent breast cancer in women with HER-2 positive disease, and the impact of trastuzumab use, in a large California community-based health plan.

Article Synopsis
  • About half of high-risk HER2-positive early-stage breast cancer patients do not achieve a pathologic complete response after neoadjuvant therapy, and the extent of their residual disease has not been quantified before.
  • Using decision-modeling techniques, the study simulated cancer outcomes over 10 years, revealing significant recurrence and mortality rates among this patient group treated with T-DM1.
  • The findings projected that over 9,300 people would be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2021, leading to substantial healthcare costs and highlighting the need to address the ongoing risk of recurrence in patients not achieving complete response.
