Invasive phytoplasmas wreak havoc on coconut palms worldwide, leading to high loss of income, food insecurity and extreme poverty of farmers in producing countries. Phytoplasmas as strictly biotrophic insect-transmitted bacterial pathogens instigate distinct changes in developmental processes and defence responses of the infected plants and manipulate plants to their own advantage; however, little is known about the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying host-phytoplasma interactions. Further, phytoplasma-mediated transcriptional alterations in coconut palm genes have not yet been identified.

Article Synopsis
  • The foxtail palm, a native Australian tree popular in Malaysian landscaping, has shown symptoms of coconut yellow decline (CYD), a disease linked to phytoplasma infection, resulting in deterioration of its appearance.
  • DNA samples collected from symptomatic foxtail palms confirmed the presence of phytoplasma through nested PCR techniques, indicating a serious health issue for these trees.
  • The genetic analysis revealed that the phytoplasma affecting the symptomatic palms closely resembled strains causing other plant diseases, with sequences deposited in the NCBI GenBank database for further study.
