We present the complete genome sequence and proteogenomic map for Acholeplasma laidlawii PG-8A (class Mollicutes, order Acholeplasmatales, family Acholeplasmataceae). The genome of A. laidlawii is represented by a single 1,496,992-bp circular chromosome with an average G+C content of 31 mol%.

This analysis shows that the disposition of amino acid side chains at the real beta-structure's surface is unique. If we sign the mean distance between adjacent beta-strands as "a," and the mean distance along beta-strand between C alpha atoms, whose side chains are directed to one side of the beta-sheet, as "b," the ratio b/a = square root of 2 very precisely.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAn analysis of the tendency of hydrophobic groups to tight packing on the surface of beta-sheets based on well-known parameters of beta-sheets and hydrophobic groups was conducted. This analysis shows the existence of very limited numbers and clearly outlined architecture families of regular parts for the majority of beta-structure-containing domains. Each family of architecture strongly depends on the number of beta-strands in the pure beta-domains and on the existence and number of additional alpha-helixes and on the mutual arrangements beta-strands and alpha-helixes along the chain in mixed alpha/beta-domains.
