[New evidence of the prion nature of amyotrophic leukospongiosis].

We described 2 cases and presented new experimental data on the study of the etiopathogenesis of amyotrophic leukospongiosis (AL) using Western blot, electronic and atomic force microscopy. AL is characterized by the gradual and steady progression of flaccid paralysis of extremities and muscles of the trunk without the expressed atrophy with an inevitable fatal outcome resulting in breathing disorders of spinal type, degenerative changes of the central nervous system and, first of all, spongiosis of the white matter of the brain. Several lines of evidence suggest that the accumulation of pathological prion protein (PrPAL) in the human brain is a critical event for the development of the disease.

[Biological and immunogenic characteristics of Chlamydia trachomatis strain MT-2A (serovar D) and its use for development of experimental inactivated vaccine].

Biological characteristics of C. trachomatis author's strain MT-2A (serovar D) is presented. Stages of development on its basis the experimental formalin-inactivated vaccine against Chlamydia were described.

[The infectiousness of 18- to 20-kd proteins isolated from the brain of people who have died from amyotrophic leukospongiosis].

Specific globular structures, 10-12 nm in diameter, having a high resistance to various physicochemical factors and infectivity have been isolated for the first time from the brain of 2 patients, who died of amyotrophic leukospongiosis (AL). It has been shown that these globules contain infectious major protease-resistant protein with a molecular weight of about 18-20 kD. The findings indicate the unique nature of a disease and they open new aspects of AL etiopathogenesis.
