Tire tread particles are microplastics (< 5 mm) and leach organic chemicals into aquatic environments. It is important to understand the behavior of tire wear compounds in sunlight-exposed waters in terms of their persistence, removal, and transformation. Therefore, we conducted photolysis experiments with leachates from laboratory-generated tire tread particles (TTP) over 72 h in a solar simulator to evaluate the behavior of leached compounds and fluorescent components over time.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed 331 patients with primary brain abscesses (PBAs) from 39 centers in 16 countries, focusing on infection causes, risk factors, and mortality outcomes over a 12-year period.
  • Study results showed that the majority of patients were middle-aged men (average age 46.8), with symptoms like headaches and fever; Gram-positive cocci were the most common pathogens.
  • Key factors influencing mortality at 42 days included intravenous drug use and malignancy, while factors affecting 180-day mortality included temporal lobe involvement and the presence of unidentified bacteria.

Cross-border flow of untreated sewage from Mexico into the USA via the Tijuana River is public health issue with negative consequences for coastal communities. Here we evaluate the potential application of fluorescence-based, submersible tryptophan-like (TRP) and humic-like (CDOM) fluorescence sensors for real-time tracking of wastewater pollution in an estuarine environment. Sonde fluorescence measurements were compared with benchtop fluorescence, fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) concentrations, and real-time specific conductivity measurements in the Tijuana River Estuary during dry and wet weather conditions, and with and without cross-border flow.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the activation of the immune response against self antigens. Numerous reproductive complications, including reduced birth rate and complications for the mother and the fetus during pregnancy, have been observed in women with SLE. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effect of SLE development on oocyte meiosis in lupus-prone mice.

Evaluating persistent trace organic chemicals (TOrCs) and transformation products (TPs) in membrane bioreactors (MBRs) is essential, given that MBRs are now widely implemented for wastewater treatment and water reuse. This research applied comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC/TOF-MS)-based nontargeted analysis to compare the effectiveness of parallel aerobic and anaerobic MBRs (AeMBRs and AnMBRs, respectively), treating the same municipal wastewater. The average total chromatographic feature peak area abundances were significantly reduced by 84% and 72% from influent to membrane permeate in both the AeMBR and AnMBR ( < 0.
