Background: Serum and urinary uromodulin are emerging as potential cardiovascular risk factors. The aim of our study was to determine uromodulin in both serum and urine to evaluate their potential as early cardiovascular risk markers and markers of kidney function in children and young adults.

Methods: This case-control study included 72 participants - 42 children and young adults with chronic kidney disease stages 1-2 and 30 healthy controls.

Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) based on different formulas is commonly used as a bedside tool to assess kidney function in children and young adults. The purpose of this study was to perform a measurement of glomerular filtration rate (mGFR) in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) with a standard 5-point protocol using iohexol clearance and compare it to a simplified protocol for mGFR determination and to some of the most commonly used eGFR formulas. A 5-point standard protocol using iohexol clearance was used for determination of mGFR in 50 children with mild stages of CKD.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with systemic inflammation, oxidative stress, and hypovitaminosis D. Our aim was to determine whether vitamin D mediates inflammation and oxidative stress, assessed through selected biomarkers, in children with obesity and/or MetS. Eighty children with normal weight, overweight, or obesity were analyzed for serum vitamin D, C-reactive protein, leukocytes, adiponectin, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, myeloperoxidase, interferon-inducible T-cell alpha chemoattractant (I-TAC/CXCL11), superoxide dismutase-1, fasting lipid and glucose levels, ultrasound-measured abdominal fat thickness, waist circumference, body mass index and blood pressure.

Childhood obesity and associated metabolic abnormalities have become pressing public health concerns worldwide, significantly impacting cardiovascular health. Metabolic syndrome, characterized by a cluster of metabolic abnormalities including central obesity, altered glucose metabolism, dyslipidemia, and arterial hypertension, has emerged as a critical precursor to cardiovascular disease. Chronic systemic inflammation and oxidative stress seem to play pivotal roles in the pathogenesis of childhood obesity-related disorders such as early atherosclerosis.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries and are becoming increasingly significant in developing nations. Many cardiovascular risk factors originate early in life, even prenatally. Elevated blood pressure and hypertension are gaining attention in paediatrics due to their rising prevalence and impact on early cardiovascular risk in adulthood.
