Article Synopsis
  • Antipsychotic polypharmacy, or the use of multiple antipsychotic medications, is common in clinical practice, but it carries a higher risk of side effects and there's little proof that it works better than using a single medication.
  • A systematic review analyzed 517 studies involving over 4.4 million individuals to determine the prevalence and trends of antipsychotic polypharmacy across different mental disorders.
  • The findings revealed that 24.8% of individuals were using multiple antipsychotics, with higher rates in those with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and significant regional variations, showing an overall trend of increasing polypharmacy from 1970 to 2023.

Background: Antipsychotics increase the risk of developing diabetes, but clinical trials are not generalizable with short follow-up, while observational studies often lack important information, particularly hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c).

Methods: We followed two Danish cohorts with schizophrenia. First, using Danish nationwide registers, we identified all individuals diagnosed with first-episode schizophrenia (FES) between 1999 and 2019 (n = 31,856).

Enzymes offer a more environmentally friendly and low-impact solution to conventional chemistry, but they often require additional engineering for their application in industrial settings, an endeavour that is challenging and laborious. To address this issue, the power of machine learning can be harnessed to produce predictive models that enable the in silico study and engineering of improved enzymatic properties. Such machine learning models, however, require the conversion of the complex biological information to a numerical input, also called protein representations.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing two types of surgeries for colorectal cancer: open cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS + HIPEC) and minimally invasive surgery (MIS).
  • - Blood samples were tested for coagulation changes preoperatively and post-surgery, and systematic checks for VTE were performed between postoperative days 3 to 7.
  • - Results showed that CRS + HIPEC led to a significantly greater increase in prothrombin fragment 1 + 2 levels and a higher incidence of VTE (24%) compared to MIS (5%) within 30 days post-surgery.

Background: The purpose of the study is to examine if prolonged thromboprophylaxis decreases the risk of thrombosis after intended curative surgery for oesophageal cancer. Study results are expected to inform a guideline for thromboprophylaxis after oesophageal cancer surgery. The perspective is to reduce morbidity and mortality in this critically ill patient group.
