The group of radiation victims who had received radiation injures similar to those of Chernobyl accident victims was evaluated in terms of retrospective cytogenetic biodosimetry in the long term period of from 17 y up to 50 y after irradiation. Based on the existing results of the long-term cytogenetic examination of the victims injured after the Chernobyl accident, an original method was developed. This method of retrospective dose recovery was based on the use of a special computer program, the time elapsed after irradiation and the frequency of atypical chromosomes.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFCytogenetic analysis of peripheral blood lymphocyte cultures of 22 persons was performed in remote terms after acute external γ-, γ-β- or γ-neutron irradiation as a result of various accidents using the classical me- thod. The initial dose estimates were obtained using physical calculations, the method of measuring the EPR signal in tooth enamel, according to haematological and/or cytogenetic parameters. The purpose of this study was to obtain evidence about the state of the lymphocyte chromosome apparatus of people approxi- mately 17-50 years after an accidental radiation exposure.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA comparative analysis of two groups of highly irradiated victims was carried out in order to evaluate the suitability of two assays for retrospective dose assessment: late translocations and electron spin resonance (ESR) dosimetry. The first group comprised 24 subjects who exhibited acute radiation syndrome (ARS) due to overexposure as a result of nuclear submarine accidents during the period 1961-1985. Their grades of ARS and individual doses were ascertained by Navy physicians who carried out primary examinations and treatment of the exposed seamen.

Their pre-accident medical conditions and relevant medical status approximately 10-13 y later are listed. In the period between 1998 and 2000, 99 long term survivors out of this group were reassessed for radiation-induced cutaneous lesions.
Objective: To identify sequelae of accidental cutaneous irradiation.
