Palliative care in Malawi: a scoping review.

Background: Universal access to palliative care remains a distant goal in many low resource settings, despite the growing evidence of its benefits. The unmet need for palliative care is evident in Africa, but great strides in palliative care development have occurred in several African countries. Located in sub-Saharan Africa, Malawi has been regarded as an exemplar of progress in this area that is achievable in a low resource region.

Meniscal Repair Outcomes at Greater Than 5 Years: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: The utilization of meniscal repair techniques continues to evolve in an effort to maximize the rate of healing. Meniscal repair outcomes at a minimum of 5 years postoperatively appear to better represent the true failure rates. Thus, a systematic review and meta-analysis of the current literature was conducted to assess the rate of failure at a minimum of 5 years after meniscal repair.

Editorial Commentary: Knee Meniscal Allograft Transplantation Results in Significantly Improved Outcomes in the Majority Patients, but There Is Wide Variability in the Rate at Which Athletes Return to Sports.

Meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT) is the reconstructive procedure of choice following a total or near-total meniscectomy for the symptomatic patient with a stable, well-aligned knee prior to the onset of degenerative arthritis. Historically, the goals were to eliminate symptoms with activities of daily living and improve longevity of the articular cartilage. However, athletically active individuals are rarely satisfied unless they return to their prior level of function, which is dependent on patient-specific, knee-specific, and sports-specific factors.

Corticosteroids in the Treatment of Pediatric Retropharyngeal and Parapharyngeal Abscesses.

Background And Objectives: Treatment of retropharyngeal abscesses (RPAs) and parapharyngeal abscesses (PPAs) includes antibiotics, with possible surgical drainage. Although corticosteroids may decrease inflammation, their role in the management of RPAs and PPAs is unclear. We evaluated the association of corticosteroid administration as part of initial medical management on drainage rates and length of stay for children admitted with RPAs and PPAs.
