Objectives: Prediction of late-onset sepsis (onset beyond day 3 of life) in preterm infants, based on multiple patient monitoring signals 24 hours before onset.

Design: Continuous high-resolution electrocardiogram and respiration (chest impedance) data from the monitoring signals were extracted and used to create time-interval features representing heart rate variability, respiration, and body motion. For each infant with a blood culture-proven late-onset sepsis, a Cultures, Resuscitation, and Antibiotics Started Here moment was defined.

We report a case of a pregnant woman with COVID-19 who developed coagulopathy in the absence of severe clinical symptoms. A polymerase chain reaction test of a vaginal swab was positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA, suggesting a possibility of perinatal transmission. Cesarean delivery was performed because of a non-reassuring fetal heart rate; the placenta showed increased perivillous fibrin deposition and intervillositis.

Diagnosing a urinary tract infection in children is often difficult due to non-specific symptoms and requires invasive and time-consuming procedures. Flow cytometry is a new and rapid method of analyzing urine to confirm or exclude UTIs. We have investigated the sensitivity and specificity of urine flow cytometry (Sysmex UF1000i) compared to conventional diagnostic techniques in a prospective study from January 1, 2014 until January 1, 2015.

Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a rare B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder accounting for about 2% of all leukemias. The clinical course is indolent, however HCL patients are particularly susceptible to infections. Here we report two cases of Q-fever as first manifestation of disease in two patients affected by HCL.
