Currently, primaquine is the only malaria transmission-blocking drug recommended by the WHO. Recent efforts have highlighted the importance of discovering new agents that regulate malarial transmission, with particular interest in agents that can be administered in a single low dose, ideally with a discrete and -selective mechanism of action. Here, our team demonstrates an approach to identify malaria transmission-blocking agents through a combination of screening and analyses.

Environmental Impact Assessment, Human Health and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Developmental processes influence the determinants of health and, consequently, human health. Yet, assessing human health impacts in impact assessment, with exception of health impact assessment, is still rather vague. Inclusion of Sustainable Development Goal indicators in environmental impact assessment (EIA) is an opportunity to enhance addressing human health in EIA practices.

Public-health risks from tea drinking: Fluoride exposure.

Aims: Due to new evidence on fluoride neurotoxicity during early life, this study examined maternal exposure to fluoride through tea consumption in a low-fluoride region and measured fluoride releases from commercially available teas (tea bags and loose teas) to determine the need to limit fluoride exposure.

Methods: Maternal urine fluoride (MUF) concentrations were measured in spot urine samples (=118) from first-trimester pregnant women and in prepared tea infusions made with deionised water from 33 brand teas and 57 loose-tea products, as determined by the direct method of using a fluoride-selective electrode.

Bauxite and iron ore mining is the major contributor to metal pollution in Tasik Chini, Malaysia. Deforestation of the protected zone of reserve forest exacerbates the problem. The current study is to understand the speciation of metals spatially in sediment to analyse the risk associated in terms of its mobility and bioavailability.
