Background: Atorvastatin and metformin are known energy restricting mimetic agents that act synergistically to produce molecular and metabolic changes in advanced prostate cancer (PCa). This trial seeks to determine whether these drugs favourably alter selected parameters in men with clinically-localized, aggressive PCa.
Methods/design: This prospective phase II randomized, controlled window trial is recruiting men with clinically significant PCa, confirmed by biopsy following multiparametric MRI and intending to undergo radical prostatectomy.
While the functional plasticity of memory CD4(+) T cells has been studied extensively, less is known about this property in memory CD8(+) T cells. Here, we report the direct measurement of plasticity by paired daughter analysis of effector and memory OT-I CD8(+) T cells primed in vivo with ovalbumin. Naïve, effector, and memory OT-I cells were isolated and activated in single-cell culture; then, after the first division, their daughter cells were transferred to new cultures with and without IL-4; expression of IFN-γ and IL-4 mRNAs was measured 5 days later in the resultant subclones.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered the most promising candidates to replace Cu and Al in a large number of electrical, mechanical and thermal applications. Although most CNT industrial applications require macro and micro size CNT fiber assemblies, several techniques to make conducting CNT fibers, threads, yarns and ropes have been reported to this day, and improvement of their electrical and mechanical conductivity continues. Some electrical applications of these CNT conducting fibers require an insulating layer for electrical insulation and protection against mechanical tearing.

Methods: This is a retrospective review of our database examining consecutive patients who underwent an initial first-stage laparoscopic liver resection for CRC metastases, with a planned second-stage resection from 2007 to 2013.
Results: Seven patients underwent an initial laparoscopic first stage with concurrent right portal vein ligation (RPVL) in two patients.
Cancer Metastasis Rev

Circulating tumour cells (CTCs) are emerging as important prognostic markers and have potential clinical utility as tumour biomarkers for targeted cancer therapy. Although CTCs were proposed more than 100 years ago as potential precursors that may form metastatic lesions, formal evidence that CTCs are indeed capable of initiating metastases is limited. Moreover, the process of CTCs shedding into the circulation, relocating to distant organ sites and initiating metastatic foci is complex and intrinsically inefficient.
