A Canadian Perspective on Systemic Therapy for Recurrent or Metastatic Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

Although the majority of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) present with early-stage or locoregional disease that can be treated with definitive radiotherapy, approximately 20% of patients experience disease recurrence, and 15% present with metastatic disease that is not amenable to curative therapy. Management of patients with recurrent or metastatic (r/m) NPC who are not candidates for local salvage therapy is challenging in Canada, as there is uncertainty in extrapolating evidence that is largely generated from Southeast China to non-endemic regions such as Canada. Currently, treatment options in Canada are limited to chemotherapy regimens that can only achieve short-term response and prolongation of survival.

Synthesis of Biomass-Based Linear Aliphatic Polyesters Based on Sebacic Acid and 1,18-Octadecanedioic Acid and Their Thermal Properties and Odd-Even Effect.

A series of biomass-based linear aliphatic polyesters are synthesized by combining sebacic acid (SA) (C10 diacid) and 1,18-octadecanedioic acid (OA) (C18 diacid) with a series of diols with varied alkyl chain lengths (C2 to C10 diols). SA and OA are obtainable from castor oil and palm oil, respectively. The reaction extent (polymerization extent) is high (≥96%) in all cases, and the number-average molecular weight (M) is 10 000-43 000 g mol after purification.

Mediator, a transcriptional coactivator, regulates plant growth and development by interacting with various transcriptional regulators. MEDIATOR15 (MED15) is a subunit in the Mediator complex potentially involved in developmental control. To uncover molecular functions of Arabidopsis MED15 in development, we searched for its interactors.

Nutritional characterization of patients with oropharyngeal cancers: impact of human papillomavirus status.

Background: Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive status is increasing relative to HPV-negative disease. Nutritional features of OPSCC patients according to HPV status is unclear.

Subjects/methods: Canadian and Spanish patients with OPSCC were assessed for body mass index (BMI), weight loss grade (WLG), and computed tomography-defined skeletal muscle index (SMI).
