The International Space Station will provide a "World Class" environment for microgravity research. Ensuring this environment requires care in all aspects of its design. These aspects include consideration of the acceleration at near-orbit-tune-periods, such as gravity gradients and station drag, as well as controlling station structural dynamic modes, mechanical disturbances, and crew disturbances.

In addition, the ISS offers a platform for performing observations of Earth and Space from a high-inclination orbit, outside of the Earth's atmosphere.
