Background: Good evidence is available that socioeconomic status (SES) positively correlates with access to orthodontic treatment. There is much less literature, however, on whether socioeconomic inequities affect patients once they are in treatment. SES predicts of treatment outcomes across many health disciplines.

Objective: To collate the body of evidence in economic studies of different dental interventions.
Methods: Eligible English studies after 1980 were sourced from MEDLINE using MeSH terms and reviewed independently by 4 teams. Studies were grouped according to the type of dental intervention and their quality appraised using Drummond's Checklist.
This Paper reviews current concepts regarding the aetiology and treatment of needle phobias in young patients.
