Von Hippel-Lindau disease: new strategies in early detection and treatment.

Unlabelled: Von Hippel-Lindau disease is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder causing hemangioblastomas of the central nervous system (CNS), retinal hemangiomas, renal cell carcinomas, pheochromocytomas, pancreatic and liver cysts, and epididymal cystadenomas.

Purpose: Since 1976, we have periodically screened for the lesions in a large affected family and were able to evaluate new strategies in detection and treatment.

Patients And Methods: A total of 23 individuals underwent the screening program.

Urinary fluoride excretion in responders and nonresponders after fluoride therapy in osteoporosis.

The aim of the study was to investigate the usefulness of urinary fluoride excretion in evaluating fluoride therapy. In a prospective study, 35 patients with osteoporosis were treated for about 44 months with a mean dosage of 31.4 mg fluoride ion per day.

Experiences with a training course in patient counseling.

A program in patient counseling for dental students is described. The main objective of the present course is to make the students more aware of their own behavior and to train them in patient-centered behavior. In an effort to evaluate the effects of the training, a pilot evaluation study was completed.
